What I'm Mad About Today:
One of the things that bothered me so much about the Iraq war was the fact that every day, thousands of people are dying in Africa--of aids, and sadistic governments. It is estimated that 1 in 3 Africans will die of aids. This isn't just a problem--it's genocide. And if we (the united states, and other in the western world) will not come to the aid of these nations, we are partially responsible for their bloodshed. Some people would say that we should look out for ourselves, and let other nations handle their own problems. This is partially true, in situations where the issues are much smaller. But 1 in every 3 Africans is incredibly horrific, and every nation should be willing to offer some support. Nations are donating 15 BILLION dollars to rebuild Iraq--not counting other private charities that individual citizens may choose to help. But how much is the United States giving to Africa? 15 MILLION--not billion. And all this means little to the governments there that are frantically trying to repay their debts to the United States and others. Excuses for not giving Africa more money usually say something to the equivalent of "the governments in africa have not been doing much with the money that we have given them." But i ask, if the people who claim this really cared about Africa, wouldn't they be frantic to try and create some new way to help, if giving money to the governments does nothing? A government sponsored charity, like the Red Cross, could give people the medicine and food they need to live. I realize that the issues involved are complicated, but that should not stop us from working harder than ever to help africa.
