The Annual Florida Woodcarvers Roundup

The Roundup will be held at Bahr's Mobile Home Park, 39444 Dancers Lane, Zephyrhills, Florida 33540 which is on Rt54, 1.3 miles east of Rt301

This is both an educational opportunity with woodcarving classes as the main event and a social opportunity to gather and explore your woodcarving passion with others. It is a no pressure, carefree carving event with very few guidelines. Take as many classes as you want to, or no classes at all, just come and carve along. If you would like to improve your skills, or would like to learn how to carve, come for a few quiet days of wood carvers getting together to have a great time cutting up!!!

Carving classes Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Non carving companions and visitors are welcome at anytime during the Roundup. Art, craft and quilting classes for non-carving companions may be available. Evening social events including dinners, contests and musical Jam sessions.

"Keep in mind when selecting a class that the objective should be to take classes from several different instructors during the roundup with the idea that you will learn many new techniques and skills vice coming home with all finished projects. Many of the projects offered as a one day class could take more than one day to complete but, in that day, you can learn the techniques most important to finishing the project at your own pace. This is a great opportunity to see the instructor's projects and sample their teaching techniques.

The Roundup organizers are Tony and Lucille Erickson and Jim O'Dea. We will have a welcome table set up as you enter the carving class area - look for the Rec Building and go just beyond it. There you can find out what classes are being offered and when. You will also be asked to sign a "Hold Harmless Agreement" and given a name badge that allows you to participate in the woodcarving classes. Visitors and non-carving companions are also required to sign a "Hold Harmless Agreement". To see a copy of this agreement click here

Visitors and non-carving companions do need to register when they arrive as EVERYONE MUST SIGN a HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT in order to be at the Bahr's facility not just those taking woodcarving related classes. We don't ask for a daily donation for visitors, but if you want to have a visitor or non-carving companion at Hot Dog night or Pizza night please consider an additional donation at that time to help us cover the costs.

Costs: there are two types of costs involved which are: the costs of Organizing the Roundup which is what you contribute to when you Register for the Roundup(donation of $6 a day); and the Class Costs which you pay directly to the instructors.

What are the costs of Organizing the Roundup? - Facilities, Canopies, Equipment (tables/chairs/coffee pots/extension cords), Supplies ( for Hot dog night, Pizza, coffee, water, sugar, filters, napkins, canes contest),and Advertising. These costs are met with the moneys provided with your roundup registration donation. For the first two Roundups we tried various ways of raising that money during the roundup vice requesting it in advance - bottom line: it was too hard and a few were carrying the cost for many.

Registration Options We have two registration options: Pre-registration for as many days as you want and be assured of a seat in the class -OR- daily registration when you arrive and select from what is open then.

New this year is the option to Pre-register ON-LINE and make your donation via PayPal. Look for the links on our home page and other pages. Pre-registration for $6 daily donation - Those that pre-register will still have the option to change classes (assuming there is open space in the class) up to 9am each morning of the class start day. The daily Roundup Pre-registration donation includes your participation in the Hot Dog Dinner night or Pizza Dinner night, and daily coffee When you pre-register, in addition to entry to the evening activities, you will get 2 free tickets for the cane give away and door prizes.

If you pre-register and later change your mind about which class you want to be in, just email Tony by 15 March and ask if you can swap classes or add a class to a day you left blank. If an instructor drops out, we will contact you and shift you to an open class of your choice.

Daily registration with a $6 donation per day Many carvers will be able to commute from home and thus may chose to only come for a few days vice all 4 days (hereafter referred to as Day Trippers). Anticipating that many of these people will not decide to come until the last minute, we have established a daily registration donation of $6 per day. As it would be too confusing for us to accommodate last minute class assignments, there is no pre registration of classes for day trippers, just show up that day, get a special Day tripper ID (at our Roundup Registration tent, the ID must be turned in at the end of the day )and get in a class if space available. The number of Day-Trippers has been steadily raising so pre-registration is highly encouraged to ensure your class preference Free coffee is available to DayTrippers daily.

What are the Class Costs - There is an "Instructional Fee" and "material costs" which vary. Specific class material costs such as blanks, roughouts etc. and the Instructional Fee are paid directly to the instructors. See the class descriptions for specific class costs.

Pre-registration will be the only opportunity to get into some classes as the most popular classes will fill up by 15 March. In a few instances where roughouts are used, the instructor may elect to only bring enough for those that pre-registered plus one or 2 extras so you may miss out on those classes also. Pre-registration assures you a spot in the class. We encourage you to see the instructor on Wednesday and purchase the materials so you are assured of them also. We accept Pre-registrations from 1 Dec up to 15 March. After 15 March you can register and pay when you arrive. Pre-registrations will give the instructors and us a better idea of how many students to plan table space for. For you Pre-registration will provide the confidence that you will get in the class of your choice even if you don't arrive until 9 am when the class starts. You can change your classes by emailing Tony before 15 March.

Class assignments will be made based on the postmark date of your pre-registration or the Date/time of your ON-LINE pre-registration. We will send out acknowledgements of pre-registration and confirmation of your classes on 15 March if not before. Please provide an email address if you have one or a self addressed stamped envelope if no email address to facilitate this communications. Make Pre-registration check out to and mail to: L. Erickson, FWCR Registration,614 West Springwood Drive, Seneca, SC 29672. Please note on check: FWR2010DON >

Once again we will request instructors participate in carving a block for a "Friendship Cane". Larry (BIG DOG) Yudis of The Woodcraft Shop in Bettendorf, IA has donated the basswood blanks for the cane - Thanks Larry!! Also we will again provide the opportunity for others to participate in a "Friendship cane" carving contest, click here for cane contest details. You will get a free ticket for this drawing when you pre-register and the canes will be sent to the lucky winners if they are not there on Saturday when we pull the winning name.

    Non carving workshops and activities:
We are strongly encouraging non-carvers to self-organize activities for themselves. Activities such as Beginning Water Color Workshop, a painting class,a Quilting class, a Gift Bag class and "field" trips have been accomplished in the past.

New this year is a Beaded Jewelry Class taught by Karen Watson, click here for the Jewelry class description. There will also be a water painting class again this year. The quilting class advertised earlier has been cancelled due to instructor not having recovered from knee surgery sufficiently to attend

If you are volunteering to organize a non carving class or event and want that info posted on this web site let Jim know at jeodea @ aol . com. Non-carvers wanting to organize an activity have usually met at a picnic table near our Registration Tent to decide and implement there own activities for the day. Signs advertising those activities will also be posted at the registration table.

Workshops start at 9 am and end about 4:30 pm with an hour for lunch. We will release the workshops on staggered time intervals for lunch to avoid jamming up the concession stand which is located inside the Rec Building.

You are STONGLY encouraged to bring your own chair. However, if that is a serious problem for you, a limited number (18) of chairs are available to RENT for $1 a day/ $3 for all 4 days ( email Jim O'Dea to reserve a chair rental jeodea@aol.com) What we do have is a LOT of trees for shade, the Rec Building, several canopies and lots of enthusiastic carvers.
