General Information
The Florida Woodcarvers Roundup in 2012 will be under the new management and
sponsorship of the City of Clearwater's "Long Center".
Tony and Jim will no longer be sponsoring nor managing it although we both look forward to participating as
instructors.
The Long Center is located at 1501 N. Belcher, Clearwater. FL 33765. It is easy
to find and quick to get to from the interstate roads. The City will run the Roundup pretty
much as it has been run, with room for all classes to be inside the building (expect the chain saw class). To view a map of the new location click here.
They have a web site although it doesn't show you much of interest to us - click here.
Jim will continue communicating to you via this web site and the YAHOO newsletter about the 2012 event
as it unfolds. So any questions/ comments please address them to him at jeodea@aol.com The Long Center
will not have anyone to answer any questions for you directly about the event.
It will be held 4 days but the days shift earlier by a week with classes starting on Tuesday March 20
thru Friday March 23. NO SATURDAY classes. Class times of 9am to 4:30pm with gates open at 8am.
The Long Center has a gym with 3 basketball courts in it which we have full use of as needed. It is heated and air-conditioned at all times. We will have some evening activities. The building has lots of room for the events continued growth. There are 4 times as many tables and chairs here so no need to bring your own chair unless perhaps you have a confortable chair or at least a cushion.
It has LOTS of parking just as close as at Bahr's, more restroom's and the Long Center is arranging for some free food and drinks (more on food availability as event draws near). A donation jar will be close by and donations would be appreciated to help with the food.
Thanks for all your support during the past 7 years and look forward to seeing
you all again in March. - Jim and Tony
For a General Schedule of Events and to know more about how this Roundup will be conducted at the Long Center click here.
Parking at the Long Center . There will be hand made signs directing you to where the best parking is for quickest entrance to the carving area. Just follow the signs. You will be entering from the parking area into the door pictured here:
this is the chain saw class area
and both the entrance and chainsaw area are seen directly behind the poles in the center of this picture taken from near N. Blecher Rd.
If this parking area should fill up, follow the arrows all the way around the Centers building and there is is more parking avaible there.
Evening Classes and activities We do plan to have evening classes and activities. Volunteres are needed to organize whatever you would like to have in the evening - dinner, trade blanket, round robin, or contests. Also if anyone would like to put on an evening class let Jim know and he will get it advertised on this web site.
"Friendship Cane" carving contest
Again this year, you will be provided the opportunity to participate in a "Friendship Cane" carving contest, click here for cane contest details. We will have some great prizes for this contest. You will get a free ticket for the drawing to win one of the canes after the individual segments are judged and the canes will be sent to the lucky winners if they are not there on Friday noon when we pull the winning name. As in previous years, we will request instructors participate in carving a block for a "Friendship Cane". The instructor blocks will be intermixed with the contest blanks and all will be given away as part of the door prizes.
Walk-in Registration option is still available. On the morning of the Roundup, The Long Center will accept cash, checks, or credit cards for walk in registration. It will continue at $8 per day as it was last year. They will have people inside the building at the entrance to the gym for registration paying by cash or check and to give a welcome & direct students to class location. If you desire to pay with a credit card you can go to the main desk area where they can process the card info. We will continue to have a "speed line" for those that have pre-registered by mail.
