Carve a cane segment of your own design - bring your own segment or pick one up at the roundup for $1. We buy the finished segment back from you for $1 when they will be judged and subsequently assembled into "friendship canes" which will be given away as door prizes along with the Instructor carved segments.
Cane segments are basswood 2 x 2 x 3 to 4 inches long with a 11/16 hole in the middle.
Cane segments can be carved any where any time up until noon Friday 23 March 2011. You may make your own segment block, carve it and bring it to the roundup with you or carve it anytime during the Roundup. You may enter only one cane segment in this contest. The carved segment must be turned in to Jim O'Dea any time up until noon Friday when they will be Judged. If you are not there for the drawing Friday at 12:30 we will get the prizes to you and the cane(s) to winners.
Cane segments can be painted or left natural. Any type of tools can be used.
Carvers will designate a skill class they qualify for per below instructions .
Cane segments must be signed and dated by the carver such that the signature shows when assembled as a cane. Also the Skill class designator (Open, Intermediate, Novice) must be on a part that won't show
There will be three skill levels of participants
Open Class open to anyone who wants to compete, except current Roundup instructors. 2011 Winner received a Pete LeClair carved, one of a kind "Ribbon" woodcarving seen below. 2010 winner received a similar Pete LeClair original. What 2012 winner will receive is still to be determined (TBD).
Intermediate Class Carvers with more than 3 years of experience. Past winners of intermediate carving contests must enter open class. Prize is TBD
Novice Class Less than 3 years carving and have not won a carving contest anywhere. Prize is TBD
Jim O'Dea is the final arbitrator of the Rules. Ask him anything. Turn your carving into Jim O'Dea at his table.
