Relief carving is a traditional art; transfer designs onto wood, remove backgrounds, while making safe and efficient use of V and fishtail gouges. Major elements are carved 1/4/-1/2in. into the wood. Background details are added, then woodburned. Painting is done with water look-like acrylic paint, or possibly Water Color Pastels. Learn to think through the entire carving process, from design to completion, including visualizing overlapping elements, layering and making your design realistic. Today, in Low/Shallow Relief, woodburning helps highlight detail accents chosen for your project. It is a unique blend of artistic efforts.

Woodburning is also a traditional art; dating back to a time of using a magnifying glass and the sun, to a poker heated in a fire to achieve desired results. My preference is 'soft shading woodburning' as opposed to outlining. as it is superior to outlining, being more artistic. "Soft shading" is burning only on the top surface of the wood and a single edge razor blade in most instances will correct the error.

Low/shallow Relief woodcarving: the edges of one carved area slants down to the next intersecting level. The point between the areas can easily be seen. Low/Shallow Relief is a carving done indefinable layers and the entire surface has a shallow look to it. Projects: 1. Herring Gull, Shallow Relief carving with Woodburned details. 2. Black-Crowned Night Heron, Shallow Relief carving with woodburned details. 3. Oblong cutout with rope edge, pelican woodburning and seaside scene inside rope. 4. Arrow-head cutout; carved on edges/background for texture, then woodburned with wolves and feathers design. Woodburning only: 1. Country Treasures. Antique glass lamp and eyeglasses (woodburned to look like glass) book with braided bookmark, glass case, all shaded for realism.
