Barbara Mann - Carve a figure in a cypress knee - Carve a figure in a cypress knee (Old World Santa, traditional Santa face, wizard, wood spirit face, animal, structure). These classes fill up early, so pre-registration is recommended Clean cypress knees from 8 to 25 inches tall, in singles, doubles, triples, and re-saws available for purchase ($8 to $35). Basswood roughouts ($20) of cypress knees will be available for those who would prefer to do a cypress knee looking figure but want to carve basswood. No two cypress knees are alike and the completed carvings will all look different. These will truly be one-of-a-kind carvings. The instruction fee is $10 per day. Classes will be offered all four days of the Roundup.
Some woodcarving experience is helpful, but imagination and enthusiasm are very useful. We use knives, gouges and V-tools, and all tools need to be sharp as the cypress knee is fairly soft. Hair, beards, and mustaches can be carved with a small gouge or V-tool, or woodburned for a different look. The instructor will have a woodburner available. Some figures can be completed in one day; those more detailed and larger will take two days but can often be completed at home. Completed knees look best when sanded with the 220 gold, cloth-backed sandpaper and then finished. They can be painted with acrylics or oils, or lacquered, or finished with tung oil only. The instructor will have examples of different figures (several new) and different styles and finishes.

When thinking of woodburning, you may ask "why soft shading & not outlining"? I did outline for about 15 years & found it wanting; I sensed shading was integral, but how to get there. The 'shading' tip was unacceptable; then for awhile I painted & learned shading. Also, when outlining, it is very easy to "overshoot" - start a new line after taking the tool out of the line just burned, in order to move the hand & board. And, if/when a mistake is made after burning a line, a gully most likely will be made trying to correct it. "Soft shading" is burning only on the top surface of the wood & a single edge razor blade in most instances will correct the error, or at the very least minimize it. Additionally, it is easier to shade an object when it is not equally dark overall; using lost edges to your advantage.
Using the soft shading technique & low, medium & high heat will create light, medium & dark tones & different textural effects within your projects, such as water, trees, wood, etc. With just one tip, a few basic strokes & different heats - the "burning bug" may just bite you. With basic instruction & a little practice, you will soon be able to woodburn with confidence/expertise, creating photo quality artwork.
