Ingredients:

Cup

Flour

Tsp

Baking powder

Tsp

Salt

Tbl

Shortening

Cup

Lukewarm water

 

 

Vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening, a bit at a time, until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the lukewarm water and combine to make a ball.

On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 min or until dough is smooth, shiny and elastic. Set aside and let rest for 15 min.

Pour the oil into a heavy saucepan to a depth of 3 and heat on high.

Roll out the dough into a rectangle 12x9 x 1/8 thick. Cut the rectangle into 12- 3 squares.

Fry the squares 2 or 3 at a time in the hot oil until they puff up and brown. Drain on paper towels.

Serve with fruit syrup or chocolate syrup or toss in a bowl with cinnamon and sugar.
