Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening, a bit at a time, until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the lukewarm water and combine to make a ball.
On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 min or until dough is smooth, shiny and elastic. Set aside and let rest for 15 min.
Pour the oil into a heavy saucepan to a depth of 3” and heat on high.
Roll out the dough into a rectangle 12x9” x 1/8” thick. Cut the rectangle into 12- 3” squares.
Fry the squares 2 or 3 at a time in the hot oil until they puff up and brown. Drain on paper towels.
Serve with fruit syrup or chocolate syrup or toss in a bowl with cinnamon and sugar.
