Italian Fruit Cookies



1 package (9 oz) condensed mincemeat

1-1/2 cups sugar

4 tbsp cocoa

1-1/4 tsp nutmeg

1-1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp ground cloves

1 cup boiling water

1 cup butter or butter flavored shortening

4 cup of flour

4 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup chopped walnuts


 Place the mincemeat, sugar, cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves into a large mixing bowl and add boiling water to soften the mincemeat. Set aside for 10 minutes or until softened.

Preheat oven to 375 deg F. Grease a cookie sheet with butter or spray with non-stick cooking spray.

To the mincemeat mixture add the shortening, flour, and baking powder, mix well. Add the walnuts and mix until incorporated well. Drop the cookies by the teaspoonful onto prepared pans about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
