Apple Upside-Down Cake

Large Apples, Peeled, Cored And Sliced Thin

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375.

Combine the 4 tablespoons melted butter, brown sugar and nutmeg in a small bowl and mix well. Spread into a 8 square baking pan. Arrange the apple slices, slightly overlapping them, on the brown sugar mixture. Sprinkle the apples with the lemon juice. Set aside.

In a large bowl, sift the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add the 3 tablespoons butter, the milk and the vanilla and beat with an electric mixer at medium speed for 2 minutes. Add the egg, and beat for one more minute. Pour the batter over the apples.

Bake for 35 minutes. Cool the cake in the pan for 5 minutes before inverting it onto a serving plate; let stand for one minute before removing the pan.

Serve with whipped cream if desired.

**Cherries, peaches or pears may be substituted for the apples
