Sour Dough Starter




Low-fat milk



Plain yogurt



All-purpose flour


In a small saucepan, heat the milk to lukewarm, stir in yogurt. Pour into a a 6 cup glass or plastic container with an airtight lid. Cover and let stand in a warm place until it has the consistency of yogurt, 18-24 hours, the mixture will be thick, Stir to mix any clear liquid. If the mixture turns pink toss out and start again!

Add flour, and stir until smooth. Cover lightly and let starter stand in a warm place until it is full of bubbles and has a slightly sour smell, 2-5 days. If a clear liquid forms, stir to blend. If liquid turns pink, toss out and start again. To store keep in refrigerator until ready to use.

*Note: For most active starter, feed at least once a month. To increase starter supply: Replenish each 1 cup of starter used with 1 cup of warm low-fat milk and 1 cup all-purpose flour, stir to mix well. Cover starter airtight and let stand in a warm place until bubbly and sour-smelling, and a clear liquid had formed on top, 12-24 hours. Stir befre using and store airtight in refrigerator.
