Walking The Board

Walking the board is a finger exercise for warming up and building strength, dexterity, and speed. It is primarily for beginners, who do not yet know scaleforms or lead patterns, and need to build up their finger skills.

Start with your 1st finger on the 1st fret of the 6th string. Pick the note once then use the 2nd finger at the 2nd fret of the same string. Pick that note and then use the 3rd finger at the 3rd fret of the same string. Then use the 4th finger at the 4th fret. Go to the next string, (5th string) and repeat the finger pattern we did on the 6th string. Play each string in the same way until your 4th finger is on the 4th fret of the 1st string.

Now reverse the pattern and play the notes in descending order. Play 4th, 3rd, 2nd 1st, on the 1st string, then 4th, 3rd, 2nd 1st, on the 2nd string, 4th, 3rd, 2nd 1st, on the 3rd string, etc.
