Picturing the Chords


Relax. The diagram looks confusing at first, but look at the numbers, and notice the colors.

Notes used to make the I chord are marked with blue.

Notes used to make the IV chord are marked with green.

Notes used to make the V chord are marked in red.

NOTE! Some notes are marked with two colors. They are in more than one chord.

If I showed the ii, iii, vi, and vii(dim) chords, the diagram would be too confusing to be of much use.

Likewise, if I showed the sevenths and ninths, so I stuck to basic triads.



In many songs, and especially in blues songs, the I, IV, and V chords are the only ones you need to worry about. The relative minors function about the same way.
