Number System

I learned the number system in high school, while playing in the jazz band. I studied it further in college. Even then, the number system was very old. I saw old jazz charts from the '30's and '40's that used the numbers. Now, somehow, everyone credits Nashville with the number system.

Its a great system, and everyone who plays music seriously should know it. Call it the Nashville system if you must, but realize the old-timers will be rolling over in their graves.

I will use the number system to refer to the degrees of the scale throughout this webpage. After this page, you should go to The Harmonized Scale, and then Ear Training .

In Nashville, and many other circles, "The Nashville Number System" is used. It's not that much different, but you should be familiar with it if you plan to do any studio work.

Here are some excellent books on the subject
