The Blues Scale

If the diagram looks confusing at first, focus on the white notes. You should recognize the pentatonic shape.

All we add to get a blues scale is the flat 5 (b5) which is marked in blue.

Try the the blues scale first. Then as you gain confidence, add the gray notes.

Add the gray notes and blue notes to get the major/minor scale.

Try to picture the chord forms (of whatever song you are playing) overlaid on the major minor scale, and you will better choose what notes will resolve, and which will build tension.
