Fretboard Basics

Do you know the names of your strings? The diagram below shows the location of the open strings (from left to right, fattest to skinniest) in standard notation. Even if you can't read notation, you can see that the low E (6th string) is at the bottom and the high E (1st string ) is at the top.

Remember, when we speak of higher, lower, up, or down, we are referring to pitch, not gravity. As you hold your guitar, your highest string (the skinniest one)is closest to the floor. Your lowest string (the fattest one) is closest to the ceiling. Likewise, your highest fret is closest to the body of the guitar; your lowest fret is closest to the headstock.
