Here is a little information about our line of Ratliff's.   Thanks to some Great Ratliff researchers like Larry Ratliff, Jim Ratliff, Linda Ratliff, Clarence Ratliff, Michael Farr, Rich Ratliff, Gary Radcliffe, Brooks Wrampelmeier, and a host of others, I have been able to take the information my mom provided me with and trace our Ratliff's back a long way.   I was given some information/notes  and asked not to publish it on the net and I won't publish that specific information here, however what I do publish here is readily available on the net from a host of Ratliff researches.   So, a big thank you to those who so kindly helped me in my research.

The names Ratliff, Ratliffe are English (from England) and the Ratliff family traces their ancestral roots back to Anglo Saxon origin. The above are variants of Ratcliff and Ratcliffe, which mean one who came from Ratcliff, deriving from the place name where the first bearer lived or held land.  Several explanations have been given of this family name. Two of these, which it may not be impossible to reconcile and combine, are as follows: That the family is descended from Richard Radclyffe, of Radcliffe Tower, near Bury, county of Lancaster, England, who flourished in the reign of Edward I.; and that the name, as stated above,  is of local origin, derived from a place in Lancashire, England, so called on account of a cliff of red rock Lancashire, England.  At a bend of the Irwell River was the family seat; manor and tower now in ruins. The river was banked by red cliffs, now much lower than before. Thus Radcliff/Radclyffe = "red cliff."In this case, the surname Ratliff derives from any of the places, in different parts of England, called "Ratcliffe" (Devonshire), "Ratcliff" (Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire), "Radcliffe" (Buckinghamshire), "Redcliff" (Warwickshire), or "Radclive" (Buckinghamshire).
All the above mentioned places derive their names from the Old English word "read" meaning "red" and "cliff" which signifies "cliff, slope or riverbank".  Ratcliff means "red cliff." Other spellings of the name include Ratclife, Ratcleff, Ratcliffe, Ratclieff, Ratclyffe, Rattcliffe, Radclive, Radcliff, Radcliffe, Redclyffe, and Radclyffe.  The Ratliff Family Coat of Arms can traces its roots back to ancient times where it was carried onto the battlefield with honor and chivalry to defend family, allies, King and country.
The Shield is:  Silver with two diagonal black stripes.
The Crest is:  A black bull's head.
The motto is:  "Virtus Propter Se" or "FIDE ET FORTITUDINE" which translates to: "With Faith and Fortitude."

The earliest Ratliff in America was Captain John Ratcliffe, who commanded the ship "Discovery," which was one of the three ships that landed at Cape Henry, Virginia on April 26, 1607. John Ratcliffe was part of the first permanent English Colony settlement called Jamestown, Virginia, which was founded on May 13, 1607. John was captured and killed by Indians in 1610 because of a fight that broke out between the Indians and Johnís colonists while making trades with the Indian Chief Powhatan. The next Ratliff who came to America from England was Roger Ratcliffe, who was born in 1575. Roger came to America in 1619 with his wife Ann and son Isaac Ratcliffe. Robert Ratcliffe came to Virginia in 1621, Thomas Ratcliffe to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1622, Elkington Ratcliffe, a servant of Ralph Hamor, to James City, Virginia in 1623, Philip Ratcliffe to Salem, Massachusetts in 1630, Michael Ratcliffe to Virginia in 1634, Edward Ratcliffe to Virginia in 1641, Thomas Ratcliffe to New Castle County, Delaware in 1642, Thomas Ratcliffe to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1648, Charles Ratcliffe to Virginia in 1650, Thomas Ratcliffe to America in 1656, Elizabeth Ratcliffe to Barbadoes or Jamaica in 1685, and Edward, Mary, James, Rachell, Rebecca, Richard Ratcliffe to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1685. Other Ratliffs emigrated to America into the 1860ís.
