Amateur Geologists' web-ring
Adding the web-ring navigation bar
The Web-Ring has been moved in October 2001 from Yahoo to a new host. You can now add the navigation bar as Java-Script code or html code or just add a link to the Web-ring. Please read on to find out how.
If you joined the Web-Ring before October 2001 - the new host says that there is no need to change anything on your web-site at present. BUT you may have to "Migrate" your web-ring identity to the new server and change the navigation bar somethime in the future. This is a fairly painless process but does take about 15 minutes. You may want to do that before you are asked to. Please remember to alter any other links you have to the Web-Ring to the new URL - which is http://U.webring.com/hub?ring=amateurgeologist.
You will need to add the web-ring navigation bar to your registered web page.
To do this go to the to the Amateur
Geologists' Web-ring "hub"
in a new window and click on "my rings".
Click on the "View ringsites" button.
This lists the web pages that you
have registered with web-rings.
Click on
the title of your web-site(s) in this web-ring to take you to the edit page
for that site.
Click on "get navigation code".
This will go to a page about the navigation
bar, show you what it looks like and give you a piece of java-script code.
Copy that bit of code.
If your web-site is a Yahoo
web-site then you can paste
that code into an html box in the Yahoo page builder.
If not then do this:
Paste the code into the html source code of your web-page
or if it does not work directly paste the code into the middle of this bit of html code
</tr>
<tr valign="top" >
<td colspan=2 height=150></td >
<td colspan=1 rowspan=1 width=150><!-- web-ring -->
paste the code here</td >
<td colspan=2 height=150></td >
</tr >
and then cut and paste the whole lot into html source for your web site. Then you can upload it on to the w.w.w.
Note - please remember to copy the above code as it appears on your screen using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator - you do NOT want to copy the html code of the html code if you know what I mean.
If you are not sure how to do this open the web-page in Word, click on "View", then "HTML Source", this then displays the html source code for editing. Paste the Navigation Bar code into it, perhaps at the end, so it appears at the bottom of your web-page: so paste it just before the bit that says </BODY> </HTML>
Or you can do it by opening the page in Internet Explorer: click "view", then "Source", and then you can paste in the Navigation Bar code.
Or you can do it in Frontpage Express: click "View", then "HTML...", and then you can paste in the Navigation Bar code.
I don't know how to insert the code using Netscape.
If this does not work try pasting the piece of code you get from the hub into:
<p> <!--web-ring-->Paste the code here</script> <p>
and then pasting that into your web-page html source.
It is important that you add the navigation bar to your registered web-page, if you don't then you could lose your membership of the Web-Ring.
If you do not want to put the Navigation Bar on your home page, you could create a separate Welcome Page with the Navigation Bar on it that links to your home page. Perhaps something like this? But if you do that please ensure that you register that as your start page on the Web- Ring and please also add a link to the Ring on your Links Page.
You can also alter the description of your web-site or your registered URL that appears on the web-ring by going to "My Rings" and clicking on "manage site".
BUT if your ISP does not support Java-Script you may not be able to add the Navigation Bar to your Web-site. If that is the case then consider one of the following options:
You can now get the code in html form from the Web-Ring-Hub - visit the hub and you can cut the fragment of html code and paste it into yhe html source code of your web page.
Note - please remember to copy the code as it appears in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator - you do NOT want to copy the html code of the html code if you know what I mean.
If that does not work then you could paste one of the following Graphics on to your web site along with a link to the Web-Hub. The link is: http://U.webring.com/hub?ring=amateurgeologist

Or you could create your own graphic or text link. But if you do this YOU MUST e-mail me so that I know that you have put one of these alternatives on to you registered web-page. The Web-Robot will tell me that there IS a BROKEN LINK from the Web-Ring to your web-site, if I do not know that you are using an alternative link your site might get suspended from the Web-Ring!
Cheers, Mike
p.s. I am an amateur web-page writer as well as an amateur geologist! So please let me know if you can suggest any improvements to these pages and the Web-Ring
