Matthews (12/2/1867 TN-22/8/1944 Muscogee OK) & Joanna Gillum (13/3/1864-29/1/1907 Atkins AR)They were married 28/6/1886 in Atkins AR. Her ancestry, recorded by Ollie G and described by her father, James Lafayette Gillum, is as follows: "My great great grandfather was named Jourdan Gillum. He was born in England and came to America as a young man. In England he was a member of the English Army. When he came to America, he joined the American Army under Marion, in the second year (circa 1779) of the war, at Charleston, SC with two brothers. My great grandfather was 6 years old when he moved to SC. His name was Harrison Gillum. He married Jane Yarbrough in Hancock Co. GA. He was of English descent and she was of Scottish descent. They moved to Butts Co. GA, from there to Trupple Co., GA, then to Tallapoosa Co. AL where they lived until their death. The children were Mary, Hester Ann, John Henry, Stephson and Lafayette. The last named was my grandfather. All of these were Primitive Baptist. My grandfather was born in Butts Co. GA. At two years of age, he moved to Tallapoosa Co. AL." Other records show James Lafayette Gillum (see above) m. Minerva Stevens (b. 6/14/1828 Barber Co. GA; d. 10/8/1907 Pope Co AR) Tallapoosa Co. AL 1850: James H. (b 4/23/1851); Maria E. (b. 3/25/1852); Sarah J.(b. 8/24/18540; Martha Ann (b. 2/18/1857); Viola (b. 12/11/1859); John Wesley (b. 8/26/1861); Joanna; Demarkers (Mark) Lafayette (b. 8/2/1866); Louzella (b. 1/27/1868); Henry D. (b. 1/29/1871). After she died, he married Florence; they had Vera Okla and twins, Dona & Dora. He died in Muskogee OK, and is buried in Porum, OK. He left a Bible that he gave Joanna; tear stains are throughout, and it records the family. Children [there were 2 stillborn babies]:
Thomas D. Mathews (12 (15?)/ 6/ 1828 TN- 1871 McNairy Co TN) & Mary McMurry (15/12/1826 TN-1908 Sebastian Co. AR)They married 31/12/1849 in Robertson Co. TN. In 1850 they are listed as living with John Baulden (Baldwin?), 77 and wife Margaret, 74. Perhaps they are the maternal grandparents of one of them. They are listed as Mathis in 1860 census in McNairy Co TN and Mathews in Benton Co TN in 1870. Children:
At this point, the connections are not so clear. Some clues seem to lie in the Matthews family of Robertson Co TN listed in The Mat(t)hews Family by John R. Boots Jr. and the Anne Mongtomery typescript genealogy. The two generations with possibilities for linking to Thomas D. Matthews are given here: Sampson Mathews (23/11/1767 Rockbridge Co VA- 10/11/1846 Robertson Co T) & Elizabeth Johnson (11/30/1770 NC-14/7/1847 Robertson Co. TN)They were married in 1794. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Johnson Sr., a Revolutionary soldier from NC, and Rachael Holman. Children:
Richard Mathews (ca. 1737 Augusta Co. VA -1799 Robertson Co. TN) & Elinor Bradshaw
They were married in 1759.
Richard served as an Ensign in the Revolution and later moved with his family
to Kentucky and finally to Springfield in Robertson Co. TN. Elinor was the daughter
of Thomas (m. Margaret?) Bradshaw, dying in Augusta Co. in 1776 and noting Jane
and her son, Thomas, in his will, witnessed and proved by Richard and William
Mathews and Mary Mathews.
John Mathews (-1757) & Anne ArcherHe migrated from Ireland (County Antrim?) into Augusta Co VA with his in-laws, the Sampson Archer family, settling in the Forks of the James, near Natural Bridge, around 1732. He is said by John Boots not to be related to Samuel Matthews. However, some authors, including James Alonzo Matthews, believe he was descended from Governor Matthews (see the Tompson-Hale-Douglas genealogy): that his father was Samuel Mathews (and Margaret ---_, his grandfather was John Mathews who lived at Denbeigh and married in 1683 Elizabeth Tavernor; his great grandfather was SAmuel Matthews, eldest son of Governor Matthews. He says that our John Matthews emigrated to West Augusta in 1736-7 near Natural Bridge in the fork of the James River (1600 acre grant) and married the daughter of Sampson Archer of Gilmores Spriings, a neighbor.
His will, written 20 April 1757: John Mathews' will, of Forks of James River, Gent.--To son John, tract where on son John lives; to son Joshua, tract whereon son Joshua lives for life with remainder to Joshua's 2 children, Anna and Elizabeth, both infants; if they die in infancy, then to their uncle George and Archer, and William; son Richard, 1 shilling; to son Sampson, tract called Kelley's entry on Borden's Branch, 350 acres; to son George, 1 shilling; daughters, Jane, Anne, Rachel, 1 shilling each; daughter Elizabeth, infant; sons William and Archer, infants; wife, Anne; to poor of Augusta Parish provided it is not divided before testator's death. Executors, sons Sampson and George, who are to convey to Wm. Bradshaw a tract sold to Bradshaw. Teste: Matthew Campbell, Anna Kelley, Sno. Poage. Proved, 16th November, 1757, by Campbell and Poage. Children:
