8. Richard3 Bernard (Richard2, Francis1) was born on 12 March 1607/8 in Turvey, Bedfordshire, England. He married Dorothy Alwey on 12 December 1632 in St. Faith-the-Virgin, London, England. He married Anna Cordray on 25 November 1634 in St. Andrew-in-the-Wardrobe, London, England. He died between 10 November 1648 and 3 April 1651.
On 3 January 1647/48 in York County, Virginia,::: there was an agreement between Capt. Tho. Harrison, Capt. Tho. Harwood, Gents., overseers of the will of William Pryor, late of Virginia, gent., decd., of the one part, and Richard Barnard, Gent, of the other part. The overseers lease Barnard the plantaion where Pryor recently lived & died, for 3 years. Barnard agrees to build a dwelling house 40 x18. He also promises to pay the overseers 300 lb of tob on the 10th Oct next. Richard Bernard of Yorke in Virginia, Gent., promises to pay unto Capt. Thomas Harrison of Middlesex, Gent., or his assignees for the use of the children of Will. Pryor, Gent., decd., for 34 cows, yearlings, and a boat, fowerscore and one pounds of lawfill English money on the 30th May 1649. Signed: Rich: Bernard. Wit. Phillip Thacker, John Harawell. On 10 November 1648 in York County, Virginia, Katherine Ringe states that she hath served Mr. Richard Barnett at his howse as a chare woman. Barnett ordered to pay her 250 lb. of tob. & costs.

Anna Cordray was baptized on 29 April 1609 in Chute, Wiltshire, England. She died between 1670 and 22 September 1671 in Gloucester County, Virginia. On 3 April 1651 in Northumberland County, Virginia, Patent Book 3:306 Mrs. Anna Bernard received 1000 a on the South side Potomeck River. {Beginning on the south side of a marsh & small creek upon the Ewd side of the Upper Matchotiq River adj land called Thomas Peakes land.} Trp. 20 persons: Mr. Richard Bernard, Mrs. Anna Bernard, Mrs. Elinor Corderoy, Eliza Barnett, Cordery Barnett, Richard Barnett, Wm. On 2 July 1652 in Gloucester County, Virginia,::: Patent Book 3:204; Mrs. Anna Barnett, 700 acres, part thereof upon the head of Jones his creek, ely upon Rappahannock horse path, sly upon land of Col. Richard Lee & Hugh Doudinge, & wly upon said creek and opposite land of Samuel Sollace; the other 300 acres abutting NW upon the land of Capt. Lee, decd, & sw upon Mr. William Prior, decd. On 16 August 1653 in York County, Virginia, Anna Bernard wrote the following letter: "For her much respected friend Mr. Walter Brodhurst at his house at Nominy in Potomake river These Yorke the 16 of August 1653 Noble Sir I give you many kind thanks for your care of my business. I canot resolve of my comeing to Potomacke my selfe till the returne of the shipps which makes me desire you wilbe pleased to have this land seated for me. I will give a hundred Acres to any honest man forever to seat it. I should be gladd of a good neighbour, but desire this hundred Acres may lay without me on some side of this tract of land and not hindering one seat of land, now lieing betweene me and the River, the prospect of water will be my pleasure, Sir, I shall wholly depend on You for the seating of this land and I am confident you will doe in this for me as for your selfe. I love to have what is mine intire so that I may not trespass my neighbour nor he me what charge you are at in my business these lines shall obleige me to pay and your love and care. I shall ever studdy the best way of returning. I give Mrs. Broadhurst many thanks, for accepting soe poore a token. I should be gladd of good occasion to draw you and Mrs. Broadhurst into these parts that I might not onely enjoy your company but pay part the respect I owe you. my service waites on you both, my daughter Anna Smith presents her service to you both, and Sir I am your most humble servant. Anna Bernard. Sir I must seate this land this year, therefore pray let me have timely notice 20th Feb: 1653 This letter recorded." On 6 September 1654 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Patent Book 3:329, Mrs. Anna Bernard received 1500 a on the south side of Petomeck River --- 1000 acres granted to her on 3 Apr 1651 and 500 for trs 10 persons. On 27 November 1661 in Gloucester County, Virginia,::: Patent Book 4:534; Anna renewed her patent dated 26 Feb 1653, the 900a on the N side of Yorke River near the main swamp upon the head of Jones Creek.

Generation Four

13. Anna4 Bernard (Richard3, Richard2, Francis1) was born circa 1636 in England. She married John Smith circa 1652.
In a letter to Walter Broadhurst, Anna Bernard wrote: "Yorke the 16 of August 1653,... my daughter Anna Smith presents her service to you both, and Sir I am your most humble servant. Anna Bernard."

John Smith was born circa 1628. He died before 28 September 1681. On 14 October 1657 in Gloucester County, Virginia, Capt. John Smith patented 500 acres, on a small creek running W'ly down the Poropotank to the river, SE to little Poropotank Crk. E E up same to the NE side of marsh and NNW by marsh. Bk 4:184. On 1 April 1665 in Gloucester County, Virginia, Major John Smith patented 500 acres, nigh the head of the Poropotank parallel and adjoining Purton Devid't over Goodluck Branch to Totopotomoyes swamp and adjoining Mr. Peter Knight. 300 acres formerly granted to Mrs. Anna Bernard, July 2, 1652. Residue 200 acres. DB 6:151. On 8 February 1665/66 in Gloucester County, Virginia,::: Major John Smith patented 500 acres on the little Poropotank to Purton Bay adjoining the land on which he lives. DB 5:575. On 28 Sep 1681 in Gloucester County, John Buckner patented 300 acres and the description states it was "betwixt 200 acres patented April 1, 1665 by Major John Smith, deceased, on the back of Purton old Dividend."

14. John5 Smith (Anna4Bernard, Richard3, Richard2, Francis1) was born between 1653 and 1660. He married Mary Warner daughter of Augustine Warner and Mildred Reade, on 17 February 1680/81 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He died on 14 April 1698 in Gloucester County, Virginia. On 29 August 1690 in Northumberland County, Virginia, Mr. John Smith of Gloucester Co., 1200 acres in N'umberland Co., near plantation of John Eustace & John Hart, on Indian Creek (NN BkA:1).

Mary Warner wife of John Smith was born circa 1664 in Gloucester County, Virginia. She died on 12 November 1700 in Gloucester County, Virginia.:::

15 i. Mildred6 Smith was born on 20 February 1681/82 in Gloucester County, Virginia. She married Robert Porteus, son of Edward Porteus, on 17 August 1700. She died circa 1705 in Gloucester County, Virginia.
16 ii. Mary Smith was born on 29 April 1684 in Gloucester County, Virginia. She died on 18 June 1684 in Gloucester County, Virginia.
17 iii. John Smith was born on 18 July 1685 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He married Ann Alexander on 18 October 1711. He died between 1712 and 1714 in Gloucester County, Virginia. His widow married Henry Willis on 2 Nov 1714.
18 iv. Augustine Smith was born on 16 June 1687 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He married Sarah Carver on 9 February 1711.
19 v. Elizabeth Smith:: was born on 25 May 1690 in Gloucester County, Virginia. She married Henry Harrison on 1 April 1708. She married Francis Willis after 1732; The will of Benjamin Harrison, nephew of Henry Harrison who was the first wife of Elizabeth Smith, was dated 17 Oct 1743 in Charles City County, Virginia. He states," there are a great number of slaves which, after the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Willis relict of Henry Harrison, Esq, dec'd, and by the last will of the said Henry Harrison are to revert to me."
20 vi. Philip Smith was born on 1 June 1695 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He married Mary Mathews, daughter of Baldwin Mathews, circa 1720., He died on 4 June 1743 in Fleets Bay, Northumberland County, Virginia, at age 48.

He left a will on 25 May 1743 in Wiccocomico Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia.
In the name of God, Amen, I Philip Smith of the Parish of Wiccocomico in the County of Northumberland, Colony of Virginia, Gentleman, being very sick & Weak but of perfect sense & Memory do make & ordain this my Last Will & Testament in manner & form following --- Imprimus, I give my soul to God & my Body to the earth to be decently buried at the Discretion of my Execu.rs hereafter named. Item, I desire that all my just debts be fully paid & satisfied as soon as may be after my decease. Item, I give to my Daughter Mary, the wife of Jesse Ball, Gentleman, five pounds curr.t money & do declare this legacy to be in full her part or portion which she can or may claim to my estate having heretofore given her a sufficient fortune. Item, I give my five daughters, Mildred, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, and Susannah each of them two hundred pounds sterling and one feather bed & plain furniture to be paid them as they attain the age of twenty one years or day of marriage which shall first happen & I do declare it to be my true Intent & meaning that in case either of them die before she attains the sd age or marries, her legacy shall be vested in and belong to the survivors of them, my sd daughters, Mildred, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, and Susannah & to be paid to them as aforesd. Item, It is my Will that my said five daughters last mentioned be provided for & maintained by my son Baldwin Mathews Smith till they become entitled to their fortunes, suitable to their estate and degree without any deduction or abatement out of their aforesd legacy for the same. Item, As I have given my son a letter to Mrs. Dickey to let her know that I would make my son worth more than two thousand pounds with his estate at York ___th on Acct of his having Mrs Fany Burgis, he will be entitled at my decease and my true intent and meaning is that my son pay my aforesd daughters the aforesd mentioned legacy according to my will before mentioned and that my wench Peg be set free. Item, All the rest of my estate of what nature or quality forever whether real, personal or mixt, I give & bequeath to my son Baldwin Mathews Smith and his heirs forever and I desire that my estate may not be appraised. Item, I do appoint my loving brother, Mr. Augustine Smith, my nephew Mr. John Smith, and my son Baldwin Mathews Smith whole & sole execrs of this my last will and testament & I do desire my son in law, Jesse Ball & my friend Mr. Thos. Edwards to be my trustees to be aiding & assisting to my sd execurs in & about the execution of this same to each of which said executors and trustees I give a mourning ring and lastly I do revoke all other wills by me made and acknowledge this to be my last will & testament, in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this XXV Day of May 1743.
