On November 11, 1999, I spent the day visiting Bunker Hill Covered Bridge located in Claremont, Catawba Co., North Carolina.  This bridge was built in 1894 by Andy Ramseur using an 1839 patented design by Herman Haupt.  The design was published in 1890 in Haupt's book, The General Theory of Bridge Construction. This bridge is one of only two covered bridges remaining in North Carolina and is the only bridge remaining anywhere using General Haupt's Improved Lattice (timber) Truss design.  The bridge was "renovated" in 1994.  The bridge is located just off I-40 and north of highway 70 in Claremont.  The bridge is 85 ft. long and spans Lyles Creek.  The bridge is closed to auto traffic but can be accessed by foot.  Bunker Hill Covered Bridge
Some Fantastic News! The Lincoln Co., Maine Haupt families now know of their ancestral village!  John Haupt of Waldoboro, Maine was a Hessian Soldier from Tuebingen, Wurttemberg.  This discovery was made Dec. 9, 1999 as the result of a phone call to Donald Williams of Hendersonville, TN.  He is a descendant of this line.  Through my collected notes and information from Donald, I was able to confirm this link.  See: John Haupt of Waldoboro, Maine.  Also, click here to see: The Old City of Tuebingen, Wurttemberg.
Another Colonial Haupt line identified!  See: Johannes Haupt (b. 1734) of Northampton Co., PA. Church burial records just "uncovered" (Dec. 1999) of Salem Reformed Lutheran Church indicate this is Johannes (b. 1734) brother to Johann Nicholas (b. 1725).  See also Windesheim records.
I spent a couple days researching the Christian Haupt (Hope) line in the Columbia, SC area over the Christmas Holiday.  I had a very pleasant time visiting with Jay Hope, his mother, his aunt Martha Hope Tennant, Jay's sister Peggy and brother Dee during my visit Dec. 26 to 27, 1999.  Also visited briefly with the Ronald Hope family of Pomaria, SC.  An update has been posted on this line.  See: Christian Haupt of Newberry, SC.

May 20, 2001:

For all the serious Haupt researchers out there, I have made some major adjustments to a couple of the colonial Haupt lines.  I have moved Valentine Haupt of Somerset County, PA into
Johann Nicholas Haupt's (b. 1709) line.  There were three reasons for this.  The first is that there has never been any evidence provided to place him in Johannes Haupt's line as the earlier researchers had done.  The second reason is that one of Nicholas' known sons (Sebastian of North Carolina) had a son named Valentine and German first names tend to run in the closer family as opposed to the more extended family.  The third reason is with the recent discovery of the death record of Johannes Haupt in Northampton Co., PA showing he was born in 1734, there is no evidence that Johannes Haupt (b. 1712) ever immigrated.  With Valentine being born abt. 1745, he could not be a son of this Johannes who was born in 1734.  Still, with all this being said, it is not solid evidence.  It seems to just make more sense for Valentine to be a son of Johann Nicholas Haupt (b. 1709) who arrived in Philadelphia in 1740.

The second major change involved Michael Haupt (b. abt. 1750) whom I had listed as a son of Johannes Haupt (b. 1712).  Since the only Haupt lines that had connections with Nockamixon Township were the brothers;
Johann Nicholas Haupt (b. 1725) and Johannes Haupt (b. 1734) and since Michael Haupt's name appears in the church records there, I am assuming a relationship with the previous two.  The name Michael also runs in this family as Johannes (b. 1734) had a son named Michael (b. 1769).  Also, these two (Johann Nicholas and Johannes) had an uncle Michael in Windesheim.

Through the use of Facebook, I have just been in contact with Georg Pappenheim of Vienna, Austria.  He carries the title of Graf (Count) zu Pappenheim.  He has confirmed to me that the Haupt family name has been maintained by the Lords and Counts of Pappenheim for nearly 900 years.  In fact, Georg has three middle names, the last one of those is Haupt.  He is actually Georg Haupt but now uses the Pappenheim as his surname as a result of his title.  (May 26, 2009).
