| Houpt Bakery Cutters |
| The above, "Long John Revolving Utensil" is just an example of the many bakery cutters invented by Donald Melvin Houpt of Palestine, Illinois. The bakery building was built on Main Street about 1924. The bakery was operated for about 20 years when James Houpt, a son of Donald's took over. The bakery was closed in 1956. While operating the bakery, Donald Houpt designed a revolving donut cutter. From this initial design evolved a variety of other products such as the one seen above. Upon Donald Houpt's death in 1966, the Houpt Cutter business transferred to Donald's brother Burl and Burl's son Kenney in Olney, Illinois. Kenney is now the owner of the business. This line descended from Anthony and Susanna Houpt of Sullivan Co., Indiana. Anthony was a son of Valentine Houpt of North Carolina. Valentine was a son of Sebastian Houpt/Haupt of Iredell County, NC. This Sebastian was a son of Nicholas Haupt born 1709 in Windesheim. |
