According to the 1880 census for St. Clair Co., IL, Peter Haupt (b. 1826) had connections to Nassau (Germany).  According to the census, his father was born there.

It is possible that he is the Peter Haupt (b. Dec. 12, 1828) who was the son of Philip and Catherina (Klein) Haupt who were married Feb. 16, 1828.  They were from Monreal/Hausten, Rheinland - very near the Hessen-Nassau area.  Philip was born in Weibern and would die in Hausten, Rheinland in 1733.  Catherina (and sons Peter and Michael) emigrated and settled in the Skokie, IL area (with other Haupt family members).  This connection however has not been verified.  Skokie is clear across the State of Illinois from St. Clair County.
