George Allen Houpt
George Allen Houpt (b. Nov. 17, 1829) was a son of Henry and Sara (Lightcap) Houpt of Upper Dublin Township in Montgomery County, PA.  During the 1850's he moved to Virginia.  During the Civil War he served with the CSA.  He enlisted March 10, 1862 in Bedford, VA and served as a private in Co. G, 28th Regiment, Virginia Infantry (age 33).

He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.  He was first imprisoned at Fort Delaware and on Oct. 26, 1863 was sent to the Union Prison at Point Lookout, MD.  Family members in Pennsylvania learned of his capture and became involved.  His brother Francis requested his release from the Union Prison on March 24, 1864.  Their efforts paid off and he was released on April 4, 1864. 

He, along with his wife Susanna (Wingard) Houpt, and their  5 children would remain in the Montgomery County, PA area.  They would eventually have two more children with the next child being named after George's brother Francis.

George Allen Houpt died on Aug. 11, 1895.

This family line descended from the immigrant Johann Samuel Haupt (b. 1725) who arrived in 1754.
