September 22, 1888, Reading Hamilton Co Ohio; d. September 12, 1971, Reading Hamilton Co Ohio. Citizenship records show John Dietrich immigrated, at age 22, from Havre to New Orleans, arriving Nov. 30, 1855. Upon arrival in America, John was living in Harrison, Indiana for four months and then relocated to Reading, Ohio early in 1856. It was logical for him to settle in Reading In 1890 Reading was still described as having "the character of a transplanted German village in the heart of America. The German language was spoken in all of the church services and was taught in the schools. The customs and traditions of the old country predominated in the social order." [Mill Creek Valley News, 4-27-1861] The German population there had made the manufacture of ready-made clothing the principal industry of Reading, and John was the son of a tailor and would list that as his occupation in the County Directory of 1887. Reading was also known for its numerous bands, numbering nine at one point in time and John was a member of the Reading Band. John applied for citizenship in 1857. He received his Naturalization papers on March 25, 1861, just a month before the outbreak of the Civil War. On February 13, 1863 John volunteered for the Union Army, enlisting for three years and became a member of Company G in the Ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry April 17, 1863. He and his brother-in-law Michael Meiser, who was only 17, and his brother-in-law, Andrew Reusing, were all musicians with the Ninth. When John enlisted he was 29 years old; he was described as having brown eyes, black hair and dark complexion, and as being 6 feet tall. (This was the same description given for his grandson on his World War I papers, and his great grandson on his World War II papers....except his height was 6 feet 1 1/2 inches). He, Michael and Andrew were with the Ninth Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland for the battles of Chattanooga and Chickamauga until the entire regiment (begun in May,1861 and having served their three years) were mustered out on June 2, 1864. "The Ninth assembled at 11:00am. (at Turner Hall in Cincinnati's "Over-the-Rhine"). Behind their band for the last time, under the command of the esteemed Col. Kammerling, they marched with precision to Camp Dennison, 674 officers and men. . . everybody satisfied. Everybody, that is except those - especially the musicians enlisted in 1863 - who said they had been promised discharge with the men enlisted in 1861. Kept in uniform, the late-comers went, one and all, back into the field to serve their years." [We Were the Ninth, pg. 178] And so, evidently, did John, Michael and Andrew, although exactly where they served the rest of the war is debatable. The Ohio Roster says that they were transferred to the commandant at Camp Dennison, Ohio on June 7, 1864. . Where they were assigned from Camp Dennison cannot be confirmed. John's discharge papers say he was temporarily assigned to the 38th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers as does the records from the National Archives, which reference "see also the 38th." However, the Ohio Roster does not show either of them as a part of the 38th Regiment, nor can we find any records in the National Archives for them from the 38th Regiment. He was mustered out at the end of the war under General Order 24 on July 12, 1865 at Louisville, KY. In the April 30, 1885 edition of the Miami Valley News it is noted that at the last session of the city council, the Mayor had appointed Michael Meiser to both the committee on streets and the committee on finance. Michael was a grocer, ("Mike Meiser, Quality Grocer since 1885" was located on the corner of Vine and Jefferson according to an ad in the 1921 Historical Souvenir Digest of Reading) and ran for election to city council in 1886. In 1910 the Meiser Building was built at 9019-9017 Reading Road. The spring of 1886 brought city elections in Reading; John Dietrich ran for Marshal and Michael Meiser ran for city council. When the results were tallied, John Dietrich beat the incumbent and won the job of Marshal. Unfortunately, Michael Meiser did not garner enough votes to claim a seat on city council. John was Marshal of Reading for 12 years; this would indicate that he won 6 elections, through 1896 and was Marshal from 1886 until 1898, only eight years before he died. Michael Meiser was born Oct. 19, 1846, married Maria Wilhelm in 1869 and died in Reading, Ohio on Dec. 14, 1817. (I don’t have information on their children.) Andrew Reusing was born Dec. 24, 1832, married Elisabeth Meiser July 27, 1855 and died in Reading, Ohio Dec. 1, 1885. He was a cooper (barrel maker) and owned a saloon and boarding house in Reading. (I don’t have information on their children.) Marian Huber Dietrich Cincinnati, Ohio
