Officers

Joseph, Karl --A native of Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Joseph was Captain from May 27, 1861 until March 8, 1862 when he was promoted to Major and assigned to Regimental Headquarters. On January 19, 1862, he was wounded at Mill Springs. See Regimental Headquarters for further details.

Hauser/Heuser(s), Louis --A native of Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Hauser was 1st Lieutenant from May 27, 1861 until November 1, 1861 when he was promoted to Captain of Company F. See Company F for more information.

Gentsch, Charles B. --A native of Altenburg, Saxony, Gentsch was 2nd Lieutenant from May 27, 1861 until May 20, 1862 when he was promoted Captain. He was mustered out.

Schuhmacher, Adam --A native of Gailburg, Baden, Schuhmacher was a Sergeant from May 27, 1861 until November 1, 1861 when he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant to replace Louis Hauser who had become Captain of Company F. He remained 1st Lieutenant until February 14, 1864 when he was promoted to Captain and assigned to Company G. See Company G for further detail.

Tafel, Gustav--A native of Munich, Bavaria, Tafel was 1st Sergeant from May 27, 1861 until May 30, 1862 when he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant to replace Charles Gentsch who had been promoted to Captain. On July 24, 1862, Tafel was transferred to the 106th Infantry, another all-German unit and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

Pönitz, Hermann--A native of Leipzig, Saxony, Pönitz was a Corporal from November 1, 1861 until May 30, 1862 when he was promoted to Sergeant. On July 25, 1862 he was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant to replace Gustav Tafel, who had transferred to the 106th Infantry. On February 14, 1864, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Regimental Headquarters. See Regimental Headquarters for further information.
