Tears of Pearls

Anita walked through the St. Louis airport terminal, her eyes scanning her surroundings. She suddenly stopped, warily facing Edward. Tension was thick in the air, but the two were virtually ignored by the passing masses, other than being given a wide berth.

”And we stare each other down
Like victims in the grind
Probing all the weakness and Hurt still left behind. . .”

Anita shook her head slightly, a silent tear tracing its way down her cheek. Edward's eyes showed mild shock before returning to their usual emotionless blue as Anita walked into his arms and wrapped her arms around his waist, burring her face against his neck.

”And we cry
The tears of pearls
We do it, Oh we do it”

Some time later, Anita huddled in the corner of her couch, Edward observing her behind an inscrutable mask as she stared dully at the floor. Tear tracks still stained her face. Edward shifted his weight as the silence grew, and Anita's wide eyes flew to his face. Edward stilled.

”Is love really the tragedy the way you
Might describe?
Or would a thousand lovers
Still leave you cold inside?
Make you cry.
These tears of pearls”

"You can't let what he did to you defeat you, Anita. You're stronger than that." Edward's voice was a soothing murmur. Anita sighed, dropping her face into her hands.

"How can I believe that anymore, Edward? I wasn't strong enough to stop him from." her voice broke.

Edward grabbed her shoulders and turned her to face him, trying to ignore the way she stiffened and jerked back from his touch. He put a finger beneath her chin and lifted her face so she has to look him in the eye.

"Face it, Anita. He's one of the monsters." He pronounced his next words precisely, spacing each for emphasis, "Real. Men. Do. Not. Rape."

Anita started shaking, a tear falling down her cheek to land on Edward's hand. She looked up at him with something akin to fear lurking deep in her eyes.

"A-are you real, Edward?" her voice shook.

Edward released her chin and carefully tucked a loose curl behind her ear.

"I give you my word that I would never harm you, Anita. In fact, I would do everything in my power to keep you safe." A wry grin lifted the corner of his lips. "I'd probably hide you away in a secluded cabin if I didn't think you'd kick my as for trying."

Anita sniffled, a small hiccupping laugh escaping. Edward handed her a box of tissues from the coffee table in front of them. She blew her nose noisily, and tossed the used tissue in the trash. They sat in a more comfortable silence for a few moments. Edward shifted, leaning back against the back of the couch cushion.

”All these mixed emotions
We kept locked away like stolen pearls”

"Anita. why call me? One would think you'd want to stay as far away from a man as possible after what happened." His serious eyes were fixed on her averted profile.

His question seemed to surprise her; she turned to face him fully, one shoulder lifting in a small shrug.

"I don't know. I guess. in the back of my mind, I knew you were safe. A bit ironic, isn't it? The only one I feel safe with is Death." Her lips quirked, "You may have fantasized about giving me a weapon and hunting me, but if you ever had a romantic thought about me, the outcome would be my choice. You would never try to force me."

Edward pondered this for a moment with a small frown.

"I'm not sure weather to be happy that you think so highly of me, of be concerned that you can read me so well."

Anita reached out and patted his hand that was resting in his lap.

"It's a gift." She smirked, "Don't worry. I don't think anyone else has that particular talent." Anita suddenly yawned widely, belatedly trying to hide it behind her hand. "Sorry, I haven't been sleeping much."

Indeed, Edward could see dark smudges under her eyes. His own eyes softened, and he opened his arms to her.

At her questioning glance, he said, "I'll keep the monsters away."

”Stolen pearl devotions we
Kept locked away from all the world”

Anita read the sincerity in his eyes, and bit her lip. Hesitantly, she leaned against his chest, only to have Edward lift her and set her comfortable in his lap, wrapping his arms loosely around her. She stiffened, feeling his swiftly growing arousal prodding her hip.

"You can trust me. I'm safe, remember?" Edward's lips feathered against the soft skin of her temple as he spoke. Other than that, he didn't move.

Anita lifted her head and looked at him a moment, then pressed a light kiss against the corner of his mouth.
“Your kisses are like pearls,
So different and so rare
But anger stole the jewels away
And love has left you bare
Made you cry. . .
These tears of pearls”
Anita laid her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes. As she drifted off to sleep, she thought she felt Edward kiss the top of her head, his arms tightening comfortingly.
Anita woke up some time later. Edward must have shifted them while she slept; they were now lying horizontally on the couch, Anita on top of him. He was rubbing her back in small, meaningless circles, and murmuring soothing words against her temple.
“Well, I could be the tired joker
Pour my heart to get you in
Sacrifice my happiness just so I could win
Maybe cry. . .
These tears of pearls”
Anita lifted her face, which slipped Edward’s lips down to cover her own. Edward froze. Her eyes locked with his, Anita hesitantly brushed her lips across his, feathering across his cheek to kiss away a tear that had escaped his pale blue eyes. She licked her lips, savoring the precious salty taste.
Edward’s gaze dropped to her lips, watching the motion. Some emotion flickered behind his carefully wrought mask, making Anita catch her breath; it was hunger.

“All these mixed emotions
We kept locked away like stolen pearls
Stolen pearl devotions we
Keep locked away from all the world”

“. . .Edward?”

“We twist and turn where angels burn
Like fallen soldiers we will learn”

((A/N: Gomen ne, but I can’t write anything too explicit right now. I’ve got class-mates around me. ^^;; I’ll make it up to you later. *grins*))
A few hours later, Edward silently looked upon an exhausted Anita, lingering on kiss-bruised lips. With a final glance, he resolutely turned, exiting the house.

“Once forgotten, twice removed”

A tall, muscled man walked through a dark forest near Anita’s house, a thin beam of moonlight penetrating the heavy foliage to spill across his face. Richard suddenly stopped, and glared into the shadows as he scented the air.
“So it was /you/ she chose over me?” the words spilled in a low growl from his lips. “I can smell her on you.”
A shadow separated from the darkness beneath a tree; Edward didn’t answer, his expression a mask cold enough to chill a person’s blood. Drawing a gun with a silencer attached, he sighted down the barrel and pulled the trigger. The bullet skimmed Richard’s arm, slamming into the tree behind him as he swiftly turned. A battle of slashing claws, muffled shots, and dancing blades ensued.
As the sun crested the horizon, a final muffled *thunk* was heard. Richard’s body fell lifeless to the ground.
Edward dropped to his knees, clutching a large, ragged wound just over the right side of his rib-cage; Richard had tried to dig out his heart.
“Love will be the death”
He lifted his face to the sky and murmured, “I love you, Anita.”
Edward doubled over as a spasm of coughing rocked him. Lowering himself to lean back against a tree trunk, he folded his shirt to form a make-shift bandage, using the remnants of his trench coat to tie it securely in place.
His eyelids grew heavy, and he let them close, just for a moment, he tried to convince himself.
“The death of you.”
His head dropped to his chest as he slid into the pleasant darkness of unconsciousness, his blood slowly dripping away from the cuts that Richard had managed to score.
“All these mixed emotions
We kept locked away like stolen pearls
Stolen pearl devotions we
Keep locked away from all the world”

OMFG. . . I think my eyes started tearing up when I wrote the ending to this. . .
I let my friend read this when I finished, totally unedited, and she took my temperature. She seriously though I was ill, because she knows how much I love Edward.
