How do I Join a Lions Club Back to Top

Lions club membership is by invitation. If you feel you would like to be a Lion, and if you are over 18 years old with a desire to serve others, your first step is to contact a Lions club. You may contact us through this web site or contact a member directly. The next step would be to visit a club meeting and to obtain information about whether this club will be a good fit for you. For anyone finding our schedule of activities is not convenient, we will be happy to help you contact and visit some of the eleven other area clubs with different meeting times. Lions clubs also form club branches, wherein part of the club may meet at a different time and place, and a liaison coordinates activities between the groups. When you visit the club, you will be given further information about Lionism, and will get acquainted with the club members. As soon as it has been determined that you want to proceed, your membership application will be presented to the Board of Directors for consideration. Persons accepted for membership will be expected to be active in attendance at meetings and projects, and to support the activities and principles of Lionism at all times

Where can I donate Used Eye Glasses? Back to Top

Used eye glasses can be dropped off at the following locations: Dillon Food Store at 7405 Quivira, Shawnee; Super Target Store at 15700 W. Shawnee Mission Dr. next to the Optical Department; The Goodwill Store at 62nd Neiman; Meadows Optical at 11966 W. 63rd, Shawnee; and the Super Wal-Mart located in western Shawnee.

What happens to used Eye Glasses? Back to Top

Used glasses by law cannot be redistributed in the US, so our collections in Kansas are used in Central America. After collection, Lions sort the glasses and remove any broken or unusable items, and count and box them. They are then transported to the Kansas prison at Lansing, where they are washed and sorted by prescription. They will then be taken by a group of optometrists/ophthalmologists and Lions to Guatemala, Honduras or other locations, where a clinic will be held and as many people as possible will be tested and fitted for glasses. Any medical conditions found will also be treated. Since many people in the undeveloped areas have no other access to medical care, these clinics are a wonderful humanitarian service.
