| Stephen King News Rose Red is nearer... Are you as excitied as I am? I just finished going through the offical ABC site and have now updated the Rose Red page with a bunch of news. Also, there is now a hardcover edition of The Stand out now, in a damn well deserved Modern classics edition. Coming Attractions reports: Timothy Olyphant and Donnie Wahlberg (The Sixth Sense) have joined the cast of Dreamcatcher. Olyphant plays Pete, one of the four friends, while Wahlberg will play Duddits, the mentally challenged young man who also harbors incredible psychic abilities. [Originally appeared in The Hollywood Reporter.] A short story by Stephen King entitled "The Death of Jack Hamilton" should be in the current issue (Dec 24/31) of The New Yorker. Check out the table of contents here: http://www.newyorker.com/MAIN/IN_THE_MAGAZINE/ From StephenKing.com: "Wolves of the Calla (tentative title for Volume V of The Dark Tower series): Berni Wrightson will be doing the illustrations for the book. The first edition will be the limited hardcover published by Donald M. Grant Publishers. No firm publication date has been set, but it is most likely that it will be sometime in 2003 Kevin Quigley of Charnel House reports: "We now have official confirmation on the title of Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla. King is apparently 'on schedule,' and while there's no confirmed publication date, we're looking at... early 2003!" Some pretty scary Dead Zone TV series/movie/whatever News -Michael Moriarity (Law and Order), cast as an evil clergyman in the new UPN TV series "The Dead Zone," didn't have many nice words about the script, according to Rue Morgue magazine. "The script is just ridiculous, a cartoon. (Producer) Michael Piller told me that when he bought the rights to the novel he paid King enough money so he could do whatever he wanted with the story." Moriarity is of the opinion that his character was added to "beat up on Christianity. Purdy is a complete bastard. He may have murdered Johnny's mother to get her money, which he used to build his little holy kingdom." The 90 minutes of Dead Zone footage shot so far could air as a stand-alone TV-movie or be the first episode of a TV series. A decision is expected shortly from Lions Gate Entertainment. And I had such high hopes for this. Sunday November 25, 2001 We've now got the list for the stories confirmed so far to be in Everything's Eventual, this looks to be a long one: Riding the Bullet Luckey Quarter Autopsy Room Four L.T.'s Theory of Pets Lunch at the Gotham Cafe The Man in the Black Suit Everything's Eventual That Feeling, You can Only Say What It Is in French The Little Sisters of Eluria The Road Virus Heads North In the Deathroom 1408 All That You Love Will be Carried Away -Sly Stallone is no longer going to be in the Dolan's Cadilac movie. -Rose Red will air January 27, 28, and 31 on ABC. November 17, 2001 On A Buick 8 pushed back, short story collection, Everything's Eventual will be released in its spot. Yep, On A Buick 8 will not be coming out in March as scheduled, but the till as of know untitled short story collection, Everything's Eventual will be released in it's place. And On A Buick 8 will be released sometime in the fall. November 6, 2001 Talisman dropped by ABC It is true, Mick Garris helmed Talisman mini-series, which has been in production hell for a really long time has been dropped by ABC. ABC said that it would be to much of an expensive project for them. Garris says that this does not mean that it won't ever be made into a movie, he is currently looking to do this as a movie movie. November 5, 2001 Dreamcatcher moving along nicley. The Dreamcatcher movie seems to be moving along nicely, casting Morgan Freeman (Shawshank) as Kurtz, Thomas Jane, and Tom Sizemore. James Newton Howard (who scored The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) will be doing the movie's soundtrack. On Writing contest winners from StephenKing.com: Dear Constant Reader: I think a lot of people harbor the secret dream of being a fiction writer. Why not? You don't need any special tools, brushes, or even classes. All you've got to do is power up your laptop and you are ready to go. So when I suggested that fans of my work and/or readers of my writing book submit a writing exercise to my website I wasn't surprised to get over 1,000 responses. Not many of them were good, but that didn't surprise me either. What did surprise me--a little--was how many could have been good if the people who wrote them had tried just a little harder, or had brushed up their skills a little bit before trying their hands at what I think of as the Dick and Jane story. I should add that quite a few were, frankly, abysmal. I am not posting any samples of these. I have always believed that it's very bad form (not to mention unsporting), to shoot cripples. But here are 3 "good" stories and one which is close to brilliant. Read and enjoy. Better yet, get in touch with these people and tell them what you think about their work or what you didn't. Like the human beings who create it, writing does not exist in a vacuum. Best wishes, Stephen King The Winners: Winner 1: Scorched by Kassandra Stirling Winner 2: The Maid by Matthew Hunt Winner 3: by Jack Skillingstead Winner 4: by Steven B. Orkin And one more, to show that even the most gruesome situation has its funny side. I have posted all of these stories warts and all-unedited-and the many errors of punctuation in the following story, Birthday Surprise, and in the other stories as well, speak for themselves. Winner 5: Birthday Surprise by Jason Winter Monday October 15, 2001 Lots of updates! - From a Buick 8's final cover is now out, click here to see it in full size, I dont know seems a bit much... -Black House stuff: It has been confirmed that Black House will only be released on cassette tape for audio, no reason was given, but it is to, most likely prevent the mp3 stealing of it over the internet, which many "fans" seem to be doing, I dont :-), also for the BLack House first edition's there is this news: Here's the scoop from the marketing director at Random House: With a print run this large, it took 3 printers to handle the 1st printing. Those letters signify which of the 3 printers printed that copy of the book. They all shot from the same master plates, so with the exception of those letters, the books will be identical -At The University of Maine's Stephen King Day, SK read from a part of DT:5 which I'm pretty sure wasnt the prolouge, and it involved more of the Father Callahan from Salem's Lot storyline. Sunday September 30, 2001 Article on Hearts in Atlantis Movie In this article from Scifi.com, HIA's director talks about directing the actors, and changing some pof the book for the movie. "The time of their appearance is not solid yet, but the date is a pretty sure bet." - October 3, 2001 will be "Stephen King Day" at the University of Maine. Several sources have just chimed in that King will be doing a reading that night around 7:30. The reading will be held at the Maine Center For The Arts on the Orono campus. Although it's free and open to the public, seating there is rather limited. If you want to attend what is sure to be a very cool event, you must call ahead for tickets. The phone number is 1-207-581-1755 and I recommend you do that ASAP. King will not be signing anything, so don't bother dragging along your box of books. - The NY Times reports that Black House will debut at #1 on the hardcover fiction best-seller list. Thanks to Eric for first pointing this out to me. The best-seller lists published this week on the Web will appear in the print edition dated Sept. 30 and are based on sales through last weekend. -Lilja's Library reports: From a Buick 8 will be 416 pages long. -Here is a new plot summary of the Dark Tower V from Ain't It Cool News: "...Meanwhile, for Dark Tower fans, he confirmed that he is currently working on volume 5 of the series, which he says is inspired by THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN/THE SEVEN SAMURAI and tells the story of an innocent community that is having its children stolen by malevolent forces and goes to the Gunslingers to learn how to protect itself. The women of the community end up protecting themselves by learning how to throw dishes with sharpened edges as weapons... Stephen seemed very happy about how the book is coming..." -King turned 54 on the 21, Happy Belated Birthday SK! -A link to King's article in the NY times about the cowardly terrorist attacks: http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/20/books/20LIT.html. You may have to register, but it is free. King is mentioned down at the very end of the article. -And, Herts in Atlantis the movie opens Friday, hey tomorrow's Friday in theathers (at least here in the US, I dont know about other countries release dates or stuff like that). (Finally, Black House has been out! Also there are rumors about an apparent Pet Sematary 3, such sites as Dark Horizions have reported about them, and it has been confirmed that King's yet to be titled short story collection will not be out till at least 2003. Sunday September 9, 2001 Black House is almost here!! As we all probably know by now Stephen's new novel, written along with Peter Straub, and a sequel to their Talisman comes out in 6 days, September 15 (Note The Talisman's first line is September 15 1981 (81 I thinlk). And a day before the long awaited sequel comes out King and Straub will be on the today show. Also there's some paperback release news, sorry this is so late but a few months ago a new edition of the paperback Talisman was released, and more recently there has been a movie tie-in Hearts in Atlantis paperback released (saw it at Barnes & Noble about a week ago) and it has the movie poster with Anhony Hopkins on the cover, and finally the papaerback of Dreamcatcher is set to come out sometime n November. Wednesday September 5,2001 From A Buick 8's plot & cover. From a Buick 8, which will be published in March now has a plot description and the real cover. Click here to see the cover. Here is the plot description for From A Buick Eight: Ever since 1979, the state police of Troop D in rural western Pennsylvania have kept a vintage Buick Roadmaster--or what looks almost just like one--caged in Shed B out back of the barracks. That's when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call about its driver gone missing from a gas station just down the road. Wilcox knew old cars, and he knew this one was suspect. When Rafferty vanished a few hours later, Wilcox and his fellow troopers knew it was worse than dangerous--and that it would be better if John Q. Public never found out about it. Mostly the car sleeps (that's one way of putting it, anyway), but even as it sleeps it breathes--inhaling a little bit of this world, exhaling a little bit of whatever world it came from. In the fall of 2001, Wilcox's eighteen-year-old boy Ned starts coming by the barracks, mowing the lawn, washing windows, shoveling snow. Sergeant Commanding Sandy Dearborn knows it's the boy's way of holding on to his father, killed in the line of duty in a gruesome auto accident. Missing his father, Ned is allowed to become part of the Troop D family, and one day he looks through a window of Shed B and discovers the family secret. Just like his father, he wants answers. And the secret begins to stir. From a Buick 8 is a novel about the fascination deadly things have for us and about our insistence on answers when there are none. Like The Green Mile, it is set in a close knit and isolated community and exploits King's unparalleled ability to describe the often sinister interaction of men in small groups. King completed a draft of From a Buick 8 before his own near-fatal auto accident just two years ago, and he addresses the coincidences between his life and the novel in a fascinating afterword. Monday August 27, 2001 On a Buick 8 cover On a Buick Eight will not be released till March 2002, but you can now get a glimpse of what the cover will look like here. Saturday August 24, 2001 Download the prolouge to DT:5. Great news for Dark Tower fans! You can now download the prolouge to Dt:5 on the offical site, www.stephenking.com. Monday July 23, 2001 Stephen King TV Series "The Kingdom" From July 20, 2001: Stephen King to Take a Stab at Network Series TV PASADENA (Reuters) - The supernatural thriller master who made household names out of "Cujo," "Carrie" and "Christine" will try to work his same magic for the first time (actually The Golden Year was) on prime time series television. Stephen King's "The Kingdom" is set to debut in the 2002-03 season, and will begin with a two-hour installment followed by 13 one-hour episodes, according to ABC, the Walt Disney Co. unit that will broadcast the show. Despite the similarity in names between the show and its primary creative force, "The Kingdom" is actually based on a Danish miniseries of the same title by Lars Van Trier, whose credits include the film "Breaking the Waves." The new show will include "shocking and frightening tales" centered on a haunted hospital built over an ancient graveyard. King has worked on television before with such miniseries as "The Stand," "The Tommyknockers" and "Storm of the Century," but "The Kingdom" will mark his first foray into prime time series television, said Stu Bloomberg, co-chairman of ABC Entertainment Television Group. "This has been a passion of his," Bloomberg told a gathering of reporters on Sunday at an event to promote the network's upcoming shows. "He is writing the first two hours. He might write all of (the remaining 13 hours). He loves this project." Bloomberg said the direction the show will take after the initial two-hour opener has yet to be determined. And despite the show's basis in the Danish original, the series will bear King's distinctive imprint, Bloomberg added. He's going to make it very much his own," he said. The series will mark one of the biggest commitments for King -- a highly prolific author -- since he was severely injured in June 1999 when a van struck him while he walked along the side of a highway in his home state of Maine.King suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs and numerous pelvic, hip and leg fractures in the accident, and was told that his rehabilitation would be long and painful. Earlier this year, King estimated his medical bills, future surgeries and lost writing income as a result of the mishap would add up to between $65 million and $75 million. King is also the creative force behind the "Rose Red," an ABC miniseries set to air in 2002. Sunday July 15, 2001 Horror Guild Nominees, and King is nominated twice The Horror Guild Nominees have been released, and King has to nominations, one for Long Story: Riding the Bullet and one for Non-Fiction: On Writing .
