They brought me up when I was young to win them wealth and fame.
But when I lost a race or two they soon forgot my name.
My life was full of loneliness, I’d spent hours in my crate.
I had a few good friends, but loosing sealed their fate.
They whaled them out, one by one, because loosing was such a sin.
I watched their sad eyes when they walked by, never to see them again.
One day they walked me on the track, I heard the starting gun.
I ran as fast as I could run, but another dog had won.
They pulled me by my collar and dragged me back inside.
They screamed and yelled and cursed at me, even though I really tried.
Suddenly it was over, the cheers had finally died.
They came and got me late at night and took me for a ride.
My face began to tremble, my heart began to race.
I knew my turn had finally come, but then I saw your face…
I was so scared, I closed my eyes, I thought this was the end.
I didn’t know that you had come because you are my friend.
I know you really love me, I’m having so much fun.
You feed me really well each day and take me for a run.
And when I’m old and feeble and must be put to sleep-Don’t be sad and please-
Don’t weep, because of you my life was sweet. I’m going home to see my friends, those who had a tragic end. And when they see me coming in and say to me:
"Where have you been?" I’ll turn and say: "In Heaven…It’s true!"
And I’ll remember you……

I'll Remember You

"A Happy Ending"
The greatest thing I've ever known,
Someone came and took me home.
Away from the track; hope I'll never go back!
Like a nightmare in my memory,
my future looked black.
Then I was adopted and my life was spared....
I thank God every day that someone cared;
Cause this must be heaven, I'm a winner this time.
Got a ball, a bone, and a bed all mine.
And I'm crazy about my family;
Devoted you might say.
Like a shadow beside them.
You can bet I want to stay!!
And I'm special too, they call me "sweetheart"
and they hug and kiss me and tell me I'm smart.
Even dreams are perfect now;
no stress, no strife
and I run for fun now,
stead of my life.

"A Greyhounds's Plea"
My Time is up. I've race my last,
they say my useful days are past;
Death holds no fear - I've had two years to live,
but I still have so much love to give.
Just once, I would love to lie on a bed,
and snuggle up to my masters head,
to feel loving hands caress my back
and taste the sweetness of a forbidden snack.
How wonderful it would feel to run for fun,
then peacefully doze when play is done.
I cannot speak, but look into my eyes;
in their liquid depths my gentle soul lies.
My heart is noble, my needs are few
all I really want is you.
But, my dreams are not meant to be,
for I fear the door - they're coming for me.
I cannot escape, and have nowhere to hide,
but my soul will run free on the other side.
