Introducing your reporter; Rory the Martial Arts Leprechaun |
"Hello all! Well I'm back from my trip to the Irish Open and it was great fun I can
tell you. In between getting totally trollied on Guiness and wondering all over
Dublin I managed to get to the tournament at some point, though from the blurriness
of the pictures I think I may have still been drunk. I watched all kinds of fighters and all sorts of teams and even some totally nuts forms guys! I didn't manage to get myself an Irish Open T-Shirt though, because they were sold out! Grrrrrrrrr...but I don't suppose they would do midget-leprechaun sizes anyway. Being as i'm an England based leprechaun, I really loved watching the English fighters most especially those of Team NSKA, Team Swat and Team Top Ten who are all very talented in my humble leprechaun opinion. |
I also enjoyed watching Team Sap Europe fight, and I know some of those fighters were English too. I loved watching that crazy american Team Straight-Up and getting to see some amazing fights from people I previously had only watched on video. Being a tiny leprechaun, I could sneak under the legs of those giant human spectators and thus got to watch some great fights from the native Tallaght team, Holland Wushu, Team Sansum, Iaksa Scotland and, of course, Bristol Death Squad. I was especially impressed with the standard of competition in the tiny kids sections. Some them must have been nearly as small as me! Also, the under black belt sparring was great fun - I have a pic here of my favourite under black belt section, won by talented NSKA orange belt, Maureen Dearden. |
Congrats to Team NSKA's Beverley Sturzaker for winning, well...pretty much everything
and taking away, amongst other things, a trophy nearly bigger than her! Sorry
we didn't get any picture of you, but seriously, did you see the crowd round
your mat? Even tiny leprechaun me couldn't get a camera in. Also, well done to
Team Straight-Up for some enjoyable and throughly show-boaty scenes - you're
all insane but you make it a tournament. Team Straight-Up's Robbie Lavoie versus Team NSKA's Daz Ellis was a highlight and I should point out that I have hundreds of pics from that fight, as you will see in our galleries, and they all appear as blurs because you were both far too fast for my camera. Robbie took it in the end (I think) but it could have gone either way - when you get that high a standard, its really just luck I reckon. Its a real shame lil'Robbie took a bit of pasty because Daz couldn't hear that referee shout stop. I felt sorry for him. No I did. Really. Honest. Totally sorry... |
My favourite black belt fighter was Top Ten's Drew Neal, at least I think thats how you spell it. I was impressed with his skill and accuracy, as well as his complete lack of fear. I was on the edge of my seat (which was someones shoe - not very comfortable) for his fight with Team Swat's Peter Edwards in what I think was the Under 84K Mens Points division. There wasn't much in it - and it was totally brilliant watching two such talented fighters on one mat! I was glad to see Clifton Findley fighting, I thought he wasn't going to at first. He's fantastic - but Clifton, did you really stop that fight to check your mobile phone? Hehehehe. Anyway, this was the first time I had seen Teams Top Ten and Swat in action properly and I was very impressed - I had a sudden urge to go training...for like, 24 hours a day. Everyday. Forever. Not that I suddenly felt inadequate or anything... |
Anyway, I should let you get to the pictures since thats what everyone likes to see;
so here are my galleries... THE LEPRECHAUN HALL OF FAME Heres a gallery for all the people I got my picture took with - what can I say, everyone loves a leprechaun... FIGHT SHOTS Page 1 Page 2 Shots of fights from the tournament - quite blurry as they all just move sooo fast! (And I was still sloshed from the night before because after all, I am a leprechaun!) RORY AND CO. AROUND DUBLIN Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Me and my human mates doing a bit of sightseeing and general arsing about... |
