There are many different packs or “Decks” of Tarot Cards, which have different influences and inspirations behind their design. Most standard Tarot Decks consist of 78 cards, which are divided into 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana (Arcana comes from the world Arcane meaning secrets and mysteries).
The 22 Major Arcana are very powerful cards, and have a greater significance relating to the circumstances in a reading, often suggesting major changes and important events. The Major Arcana cards represent a journey through life, starting off with The Fool, which is symbolised by a young traveller starting out on the path of life, and each subsequent card shows the ups and downs, and experiences One will encounter on their journey through life, until completing the journey and finishing with The World/Universe. In 1993, I wrote a poem about Tarot Cards, which takes you through this journey. If you would like to read it, look at ON THE PATH OF LIFE.
The 56 Minor Arcana have their own very significant meanings, and are further divided into 4 suits. In most Tarot decks, the suits are known as Swords, Cups, Wands and Coins. However, in the Tarot Deck that I use (Haindl), the Coins are known as Stones.
