The Parakeets

Honorary Parakeet
Beady with his mate Miss Piggy behind him. They are not related, but they look identical. Beady and Miss Piggy showing that they look alike from behind, too.
Gumby and Monty, inseperable as always.
I have 13 parakeets, (budgies) who all live in a flight cage in my home. I got them over a period of time. I took in a female parakeet with one eye who I found in a “scratch and dent sale” in a pet shop (seriously!).  I took in another parakeet who was "elderly". His owner was deployed overseas and had to give him up. These two birds fell in love and had babies. The babies were so cute I kept them all. Then they had babies again, then they had babies again.....The parents of the babies had a good life and have since passed on, but I still have all of the surviving babies.

I still take in handicapped parakeets I come across, too. My last two were splay legged babies. Somebody had actually abandoned these handicapped baby parakeets, practically featherless, in a shoebox on the front porch of a parrot owner. The parrot owner, who worked full time, could not take on two baby parakeets who had to be hand fed several times a day, so he took them to a local pet shop that specializes in birds.

That's where I come into the story. The same day the babies were taken to the pet shop I happened to be there. Since I am known to be a soft touch the people started lobbying me to take these babies home.

I have a job, but I am very fortunate that I work at home. I did take them home and I did hand feed them, and they are doing fine. Nobody has told these two splay legged parakeets that they are handicapped, and I'm not going to tell them! Their legs stick out sideways, but they are doing fine. They scamper around on the bars of the flight cage and they play games that the non-"handicapped" can't play with their "healthy" legs.

I also have a one-legged parakeet. I saw her all by himself in a cage at PetSmart and I talked the manager out of her. She just so happens to look just like one of the oldest of the baby parakeets who were "born" here. AND! They fell in love! They are so cute together. Miss Piggy is the female with one leg, and Beady is her mate and loving caretaker.

Pipsqueak, my lovebird, who I talk about elsewhere on this site, lives with the parakeets. I’m hoping that one of the parakeets will become Pipsqueak’s special friend.
