Activities

Role Play is probably the most popular parts of Ook Watch, but it is also the one which has most questions asked about it. This page is designed to help new members get the hang of it.

Role play is like a story members of the club write together by posting the next part on the role play message boards, so if you have an idea, just write it and post it. Most of the time almost anything goes, but there are a few guidelines that everyone is asked to keep to:
*Write in the third person and the past tense (for example, 'Constable X walked into the Watch House' instead of 'I walk into the Watch House').
*Keep it clean; if you're writing a scene with violence don't make it to graphic and don't use strong language.
*If you're writing about something that someone else's character did, don't make them do anything they wouldn't normally do (e.g. Don't write that they were drinking scumble if it has already been established that they never do that).
*Don't kill anyone else's charater without permission.
*If your character goes somewhere other than the Watch House, write on the board for that location.
If you would like to join in with the role play, just write yourself into the story by turning up on the Chitterling Street Station board.

The current RP storyline has been going on for quite a while, so here are some summaries of what has happened.

Role Play Summary 25th April 2001
By Tzitzilini

This is a short summary of the ongoing events and non-events that have so far befallen the members of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch. These are the lives of the people who have taken an oath to protect and serve the citizens of the city of Ankh-Morpork and who also have taken an oath to stay out of trouble as much as possible. As you will realise this is not an easy thing to do.

The Adventure Begins…

It all began with an assassination. One dark night three assassins broke into the Watch House and slit Constable Ben Gaiden’s throat. They all evaded capture and a few minutes after the attack a mysterious man dressed in grey robes appeared and carted the body away. Later on that evening Ben reappeared at the Watch House in his new form as a zombie. This caused some stir in the Watch. Knowing that the assassins would want to complete the contract the Commander, Wee Mad Alli, a woman, for your information, set up guard duty to protect Ben (A Dark Cold Night – Chitterling Street Station). Meanwhile the Captain of the Watch, Dug Cryophase, a troll, and a few other officers went to the assassin’s guild house searching for answers and redress. The assassins were interrogated but cleared since they had the necessary documents (Plan B and Meanwhile… – Chitterling Street Station).

The members of the Watch did not have much time to adjust to the situation when the city was rocked with an explosion (A New Day - Chitterling Street Station). On further investigation it turned out that the Unseen University Library was on fire. Two Lance-Corporals Tzi, a strapping young lad, and Beaky, former alchemist, were sent to investigate. Unfortunately the wizards were not to receptive to two watch members rummaging through their university and using a very convincing levitation spell suggested to the two Lance-Constables that they let the faculty handle it. (Open Up! This is the Watch - Unseen University).

This was all too much for most of the members of the watch who felt frustrated at their lack control over the events that were unfolding. Little did they know the worst was yet to come. A few members of the Watch, including the captain and the commander, decided to go to the Drum to drown their confusion in a sea of scumble (Watch Out…it’s the Watch – The Slightly Broken but still Fixable Drum). The drinking soon escalated to levels that only Watch members can attain. Wishing a slight break from the activities – he was falling behind in the watch’s favourite game, “I Can Drink Dis Many, Can You?” Tzi headed back towards the Watch House to call it an early night. The Watch House was quiet and relatively empty with only the new recruits going about their business. While in the Watch House Tzi found a mysterious note on his desk. The note caused him great anxiety and he quickly ran back to the Drum to show it to the commander (A Note – Chitterling Street Station).

Meanwhile the city was preparing for a City Fair. The captain, Dug, after sleeping off his scumble induced sleep, was already there trying to keep things in order. The Patrician was getting anxious at the non-appearance of the commander of the Watch and Constable Beaky was sent to find the commander and bring her to the fair (Welcome to The Ankh-Morpork City Fare – Ankh-Morpork - first ten posts only). Beaky went to the Drum to find the commander unconscious after annihilating almost all the scumble in the bar. Tzi rushed in as well, anxious to show the commander the mysterious note. Beaky, using his BoRRCS (Bag of really really cool stuff) concocted something to revive her. Tzi was about to show the commander the note when a woman, covered from head to foot in a red robe, used a tranquilliser dart on Tzi, knocking him unconscious, and stole the note before he could disclose any information (The Ankh-Morpork Fare – The Drum).

The commander and Beaky carried Tzi back to the Station and left him in the care of two new recruits Owen and Sarah Jayne. Beaky headed off back to the Drum to investigate the crime scene (Having a Look Around – The Drum). Before the commander left however she heard a shout from the room and found the two new recruits hiding under a table with three daggers stuck into the wall behind. Owen was slightly injured and went on about being attacked by a woman dressed in red. The commander found a note on her desk and ran off to see “her mate Dave” (Girls in Red and Unconscious Watchbeings – Chitterling Street Station). The commander rushed to a small dangerous pub and spoke to her mate Dave who gave her some important information about the woman in red who was actually working for the Auditors (A Stranger Enters The Biers – Ankh-Morpork – first post only).

Beaky managed to get back to the Station in time to see Tzi regain consciousness. A few new recruits entered at this moment and were immersed in the confusion. Beaky sent Owen off to Gimlet’s Deli to get some coffee for an incoherent Tzi. Owen failed to return so Beaky created another hangover cure for Tzi. Tzi drank the concoction and in no time was coherent again. He told Beaky that the note contains information that someone was out to kill Owen. Tzi ran out of the Watch House to find the commander but she arrived as he was leaving and everyone exchanged information. The commander took charge, sent Beaky and Stig to the Fair, Dug and Squall to the Drum, and realised that she had left her badge in The Biers. Tzi went off by himself to try to find Owen (Dreamscapes – Chitterling Street Station – first 13 posts).

Squall and Dug found nothing at the Drum (The watch arrive in search of Owen - The Drum). Stig and Beaky managed to find Aeryn Sendai, a Watch member that had been missing for a few days, drunk and unconscious at the City Fare (Ankh-Morpork City Fare – Ankh-Morpork – posts 11-14). Beaky helped Aeryn back to the Station while Stig stayed on at the fare and had an interesting and scary experience with tents, magical fire, wizards, alchemists, quantum weather butterflies, and a spectacular explosion (Ankh-Morpork Fare – AM – posts 15 on). Tzi wandered the streets alone searching for Owen even though Lance-Constable Peet was already on the job. Tzi managed to find Owen in an alley being beaten by the mysterious woman in red. The woman attacked Tzi. As she was about to kill him he was saved, just in time, by Peet, who chased her away (The Search for Spock…I mean Owen – AM).

After the spectacular explosion, Stig managed to wander into the Biers where he was confronted by the Auditors themselves and escaped unharmed and with the commander’s badge (A Stranger enters the Biers – AM – posts 2 & 3). Beaky arrived back at the Station by this time and caused an explosion that made him disappear (Dreamscapes – Chitterling Street Station – final post). On their way back from the Fare, Dug and Squall came upon Peet, an injured Tzi, and an even more injured Owen. They rushed off back to the Station. At the Station everyone tried to work out what was going on but there were too many missing pieces. The commander ordered Stig to find Ben who was at the centre of everything and after a while Dug lumbered off to help (Pandemonium in the Watch – Chitterling Street Station). Stig managed to find Ben and the captain soon joined them. They decided to go to the Arch-Chancellor and ask for his help at Unseen University (What Dreams May Come - AM). Tzi also decided to go to the University to ask about what was going on (The Joys of being a cop – Chitterling Street Station).

The four officers: Captain Dug, Constable Ben Gaiden, Lance-Constable Stig, and Lance-Constable Tzi arrive at the gates of Unseen University asking for help from the Wizards (Watch needs the Wizard’s help – UU). What will happen next?

Summary Update 6th May 2001
By Stig Cirrusminersson

At the University, the Captain detected the lady in red, Living Death, who attacked, mentioned a prophecy, and vanished. A quick rumage in the Library found the prophecy involved.

Stig & Alli went to Woo Hun Ling's Boutique and discovered that her Auriental weapons had been stolen. Somewhere in there Woodsnake joined. Tzi was kidnapped and brainwashed by Living Death, until he took on her identity. Beaky returned. Stig and Woodsnake investigated Tzi's disappearance and found his sword.

The Watch began to work on creating a magical suit of armour to fight against Living Death, and discovered her true plan: To kill Ben Gaiden when Death couldn't, and become Death. They also saw that a strange god was involved, so Ben and Stig were sent to the Priests Guild. On the way back, they were attacked by the Auditors but Aeryn saved them. In the process she vanished. Ben and Stig came back to explain.

Dug and Squall went and got the necessary alchemical supplies. Bones joined the Watch, and he and Woodsnake were sent to the University to get a Wizards. Ben was sent to find Aeryn's relatives and plan a memorial, while Beaky, Stig and Alli went to Woo Hun Ling to use the forge.

Now Beaky and Alli are there, while Stig and Woo Hun's assistant Gloria run to Gimlet's for food. Dug and Squall have returned, and Bones and Woodsnake are on the way back with several student wizard.

Now read on...

Update, update, update part 1
A not quite up to date update (the rest is expected soon) by Bones.

Beaky and Alli are in the Boutique, whilst Stig and Gloria head over to Gimlet's for some food. Dug and Squall return to the Watch house, whilst Bones and Woodsnake are on their way back from the University with a gaggle of student Wizards. One of the wizards is Sirus from the UU board. He becomes Temporary Watch Warlock Sirus. Bones and Dug head over to the Boutique.

Meanwhile, at Gimlets, Stig and Gloria are on a date, which involves only a little violence as Gloria is jeered for being blatantly female. Nothing she can’t handle though.

At this time, unknown to the watch Tzi is roaming the streets with the mind of Living Death. (she hypnotised him and made him drink her blood). Some thieves tried to attack him and he killed at least one of them.

In the Boutique, Alli sent Dug to The Station to babysit the wizards. Shortly after that the creation process of the armour caused an explosion which sent Bones into the back room and therapy for life. Bones and Stig were sent to retrieve the wizards and everyone else which they did leaving Mike and Gan who were looking after Owen (unconsious).

The armour is made and the wizards use their magic on it to complete it. The armour played Wheel of Fortune, and chose Ben (the zombie) to wear it. As the Watch beings gathered around the armour, and the wizards were inspecting the dwarf lingerie (the less said the better), the room filled with light.

A fight began as Tzi ambushed the party, he used the Octarine Destiny as his weapon. He moved with skill and grace and basically kicked their butts. He pushed Dug into the forge where his brain shut down. Tzi was incapacitated by being clubbed in the knee, then stabbed in the knee. Bones rescued Dug from the forge and took him to the Pork Futures Warehouse, where his brain could cool down and start working at peak efficiency. Bones then returned to the Boutique to rejoin the fun. When Stig tries to attack Tzi with the sword he left behind when he became Living Death, the spell was broken. They troop back to Chitterling Street Station, not really knowing what to say to each other.

Because the story can sometimes move on quickly, these summaries are not completely up to date. Check the role play boards on Ook to find out what's been happening.

Update, Update, Update Part 2
By Bones

Its a day later and Tzi decides to draw a map to show where Living Deaths temple is. It becomes obvious that she brainwashed Tzi and gave him some of her power, the process involved him having to drink some of her blood. Also seeing his sword was what broke the spell- the reason for this is complicated but basically Nitram the God of computer nerds or some thing rolled a six.

Elsewhere the auditors are talking to Living Death. They tell her that if she fails again they will abandon her to time. They then give her a new gift, a sythe. Some of her power was lost when she brainwashed Tzi.

That day Beaky, Bones and Squall head off to the armoury to get some serious weapons to kick some anthropermorphic personification butt and Stig heads off to the Pork Futures Warehouse to get Dug.

Up in Alli's office Living Death appears in the disguise of Dave (an anthropermorphic personification of peoples mate Dave who they bought something dodgy off down the pub who is friends with Alli) and gives the commander some presents- a ring a phial of liquid on a neckless and a dagger. Once she is wearing all these things they start electrocuting, burning and poisining her. The real Dave appears at this point and uses his spooky powers to blow the windows out of the building. The other officers arrive at a run and find Alli on the floor, Dave looking after her and Living Death gone. Amazingly Living Death has bled on the floor.

While this is happening Dug has recovered and left to get revenge on Tzi he meets up with his uncle the notorious criminal Chysophase, who takes him back to his club and give him a cool weapon. It is similar to Detrituses siege weapon but made specifically for trolls. Its name is carnage. On the way back to the station Dug meets up with Stig.

At the armoury, the guys find some cool weapons those brought back include the chimera apache (a cross between a dagger a cross bow and brass knuckles), grenades, anti crocodile amulet, cloak of insensitivity (dont ask), Deaths dagger and a one shot.

Outside the station Bones, Beaky, Squall, Dug and Stig meet up and are attacked by Living Death as she jumps through the window. Dug shoots her with carnage but she pulls herself back together. She soon scarpers.

Beaky climbs to the roof to look for any sign of Living Death, where he meets a vampire (Vladya) who wants to join the Watch. She comes in handy too as she says she can lead the watch to Living Death by following the scent of her blood. Somewhere in the middle of all this Alli and Dave realise that Living Death fights with the power of the chimera and uses its artifacts. The ring from her attack was chimera bone, as is Bones's club, a pendant that Dave had brought for Alli was a chimeras tooth and of course there was the chimera apache. Also Dug accidentally shot out the stair case that lead to Alli's office trapping most of the officers up there and the smallest one in a heap of rubble- still we dont like to talk about it, no major harm was done.

Ben, Stig and Bones visit the library again and after being poisened by the power of the chimera in the books Stig has a vision and sees all the history behind Living Death and the Chimera but you'll have to read about that yourself on the UU board under "The Watch is back again-dream a little dream of me"

The boys soon return to the Watchhouse and the main characters all head out after Vladya following Living Deaths scent.......

Summary for 23rd August 2001
By Stig Sirusminersson

As the Watch pursued Living Death, they were followed by a pack of Quantum Weather Butterflies. (Why? Because the two mating ones from the Fare laid eggs and Time made them hatch early as the gift that had been promised to Stig in his dream. They were following Stig because they hate him) They caught Living Death and a ravenous Vladya tried to suck her blood, which put her under Living Death’s thrall just like Tzi. In the ensuing fight LD took back the artifacts and used them to travel to the Chimera Pyramid. (More stuff from the dream: the nation of Chimera is named for the beast that was killed by its founder. They built a pyramid to it where Living Death hid from Time for 800 years) It pulls in Tzi and Vladya too because they have her blood. Meanwhile the butterflies create a tornado that takes everyone and the Watchhouse to Chimera. When the lesser recruits show up to no Watchhouse, Death of Toasters makes a new, mausoleumlike one which is the Watchhouse still in use at this date.

In Chimera, Vladya and Tzi are imprisoned by Living Death, who has a new plan to reanimate the Chimera and kill it again to take Death’s place. When Tzi tries to reason with her she hurts him some more until he comes up with a mysterious word that seems to bother her. Meanwhile a supercooled genius Dug tracks down the Pyramid and the Watch shows up in force. LD unleashes the Temple Guardians, a giant Crocodile and a giant Land-squid, and leaves her hostages. Squall manages to get the crocodile to eat the anticroc amulet which kills it and then uses the Cloak of Insensitivy to draw out the landsquid, at which point Woodsnake gets it with Death’s Dagger. Vladya gets an emergency transfusion.

They chase after full of bloodlust but Stig reads a letter from home and remembers their duty as police officers. Meanwhile Ben grows more and more distant from the Watch as the sword and armour effect his mind. Stig tries to arrest Living Death who wwon’t come peacefully and tries to finish the ritual. When Ben destroys her amulet that protects her from Time she surrenders and agrees to remain in the Temple but Ben tries to kill her anyway. Dug restrains him and he drops the sword. Stig, who handled the sword once when the stairs crashed, picks it up and almost sucks Ben’s soul out with it. At the last minute he fights the sword and brings it into contact with the armour, which causes both to go critical.

The Watch escapes as the Pyramid explodes. Tzi and Living Death vanish and then return. She apologizes for her behavior under the influence of the sword and surrenders to Time. Stig realizes that the vortex left by the explosion matches the one over the City Fare, and Beaky builds parachutes from silk Alli buys of the Chimeran equivalent of Dibbler for the ruined old Watchhouse and Death’s dagger. The Chimera, meanwhile, escapes from the timelessness of the Pyramid and vows to help the Watch if it ever can, storing itself inside Bones’ chimera bone club.

The Watch returns to Ankh-Morpork and Bones and Vladya begin to investigate a lot of mangled corpses that keep turning up whereever a magical snowglobe appears. They get sucked into the globe and wind up on a desert island with a witch. They meet some Ecksians who die horribly, and Vladya turns a native into a vampire. The natives worship the globes. Meanwhile Stig goes and rescues a friend in Llamedos, and discovers that looney-toon priest Jack Henne has come to Ankh-Morpork. When he returns the whole Watch is investigated by a vengeful Internal Affairs guy with a grudge against Alli. Alli and Toasters are fired. Tzi adopts a new uniform and a gloomy attitude. Toasters, Stig, Dug, and Tzi go and get drunk, which is interrupted by a globe induced corpse. Toasters wanders off to become a streetcleaner after giving Stig and Beaky a lead on the globes, which ultimately Stig and Dugleads them UU. They discover they are dealing with a godswarm, a horde of interconnected small gods trying to cooperate. It rains lobsters, as the other gods get angry about loosing belief to the godswarm. Somewhere in here, the Authors start showing up. The Authors are us, the players, being pulled into the Discworld. Alli, Alyson, Tzi and Mike catch up with the others at the Synod Hall having a theological discussion with Gurdur. At this point, John, Stig’s Author shows up. The Patrician shows up and chews out Dug and Gurdur prior to being kidnapped by his aide, who Jack Henne in disguise. He plans to sacrifice the Patrician at his service and bring the godswarm into full deity. He also brings Electric Monks into the Discworld from another Universe, so that they can believe in him. However the Patrician escapes and kills Henne, whose body is then taken over by the godswarm. The Patrician goes to UU to complain. On the island, Ant and Marjorie, Bones and Vladya’s Authors, show up. The natives try to sacrifice them all but they escape back to Ankh-Morpork through another magic snowglobe. Beaky enlists Volence on the grounds that barbarians know how to kill priests. He also picks up Mark, his Author. The Authors are thrown in the cells while the Watch deals with a possessed follower of Legion, the godswarm. Ben’s Author, Ben appears. They escape in a moment of confused chronology; at any rate they leave and start wandering the city. After an impromptu exorcism, Stig is promoted to Corporal and the Watch heads to Henne’s service. Legion uses his powers to make it too hot for Dug, and Vladya tries to fight his mind control and gets taken over. The rest of the Watch storms the stage and smashes the monks, who keep coming through the portal. Tzi, Stig, and Bones find a magicfree world on the otherside, as well as some interstellar hitchhikers willing to close the portal if the Watch brings them a crescent peiced shape of the same green-black metal from the Chimera story. Bones and Stig return, and Bones steals Henne’s sickle, which is made of the metal. The gate is closed, the last monks are smashed, and Henne’s corpse is burnt. Tzi decides to stay in the other Universe to escape his Author, who he blames for his sucky life. Meanwhile, the Authors roam town, accidentally spawning stories everywhere they go. Mike takes them to Living Death’s cave, where they vanish as reality flows back into the world following Henne’s defeat. Dug and Vladya are carried into a pocket dimension by Puck, a helpful god. They manage to trap the smallgods in the dimension and escape themselves, ending the threat. Stig and Ben find the Patrician, who reinstates everyone before they have a chance to demand anything. Things settle down for a little while. That’s enough of that. Vladya leaves to go kill her husband again, along with the psychic Madame Quiche. Volence becomes haunted by Auditors, who want him to kill the gods. In his somewhat erratic plans to do so, he summons his Horde which tries to sack Ankh-Morpork, and drives the Patrician and his clerk from the Palace. The Watch tries to stop the barbarians in some hilarious and episodic misadventures: Stig become a troll., Beaky a gnome, Margretha can’t control her shape changes, and the barbarians have various unfortunate things happen to them, including transparency and gargoylehood. The Patrician, clerk Baxter, and Archchancellor are chased around UU by a magic-sparking barbarian who accidently brings UU to life. Some insane Auditors become barbarians and seige the library. Vladya and Quiche return, and Vladya and Alli summon a dead Watchman to try and stop the invasion. Meanwhile, Quiche summons a dead barbarian army to get revenge on the Horde for trashing her shop. When Volence tries to steal the UU Bell, (to get Godium, for his god bomb) he accidentally unleashes a lot of magic and blows a student to CSS, which sets the pretty much the whole Watch after him. They’re briefly interrupted by an influx of magical creatures following the bell’s energy. When they arrive at UU it becomes clear that the bell is going to do something very dangerous if it isn’t stopped, so EVERYBODY but the Auditors teams up to get to kill the Auditors and get to the Library and find out what. It turns out the bell (which contains the same greenbalck metal- it’s a running theme) is putting out a reality field that destroys magic (and luckily puts everyone back in their proper forms) and will destroy the world unless it is properly sealed in the Tower. Bones tries to fly up to it on Quoth the raven and gets turned human. Before he can fall to his death, the chimera returns from his club. They invert the reality field around the bell, which means it stops destroying magic but will explode soon and end the world. Volence and the chimera get the magic sphere holding the inverted field and they almost manage to seal it up. Unfortunately the University is alive and traps them in the Tower with it. The sphere goes off and traps them in a parallel world: a world without magic. Volence ticks off the Alt-world cops and the Watch gets scattered. Alli gets captured, so Volence, Bones, and Stig go Matrix to save her. They get away from the building and steal a car. Alli gets shot so the Librarian and Volence use L-Space to go back and stop any of it from ever happening. Everyone goes back to the real world and the Patrician gives everyone a saving the world bonus. This gives Stig enough money to get married, so he proposes to his girlfriend Gloria. His family begins the journey from Llamedos to Ankh-Morpork, bringing his troll friend Chalcedony. Bachelor and bachelorette parties are planned. Alli begins to go mad by studying a physics text from the other world. A mad priest has a blacksmith build a golem from the green-black metal, which he gets from a crashed Klatchian atomic bomber from the Altworld. Then he kills the blacksmith, which prompts Dug’s uncle to ask him to investigate, because the dwarf made weapons for him. The dwarf sent a sample of the same metal to Dug’s uncle, and the priest sent a disciple to follow the sample. The disciple is in Ankh-Morpork and was following Dug. The disciple is currently at the Station waiting for Beaky to look at the metal. The priest puts a nuclear bomb in its chest and gives it a scythe, and then it kills him. At the same time, Stig is trying to piece together the connection between everything that has happened to him since the explosion at the Fare. He takes Bones, Volence, Madam Quiche (who has joined the Watch) and new recruit Angelica, Bones’ mostly human halfsister first to the Fare, and then they discover a secret tunnel system beneath the Station, with a magic boat that uses bells made from the same greenblack metal. Once there were 4 station houses, connected by these bells, and the UU bell with them formed a pyramid. The vortex over the Fare was not created by the magical explosion but only pulled there from the center of the pyramid. Stig wants to find that center. Right now, however, they are exploring Port Side Station, the first of the 3 lost stationhouses. This one has been cast adrift in time somewhere before Ankh-Morpork was settled for hundreds of years, long enough for a weird religion to build up around the lost Watch and for the crooks in the cells’ descendants to become cannibal mutants. Volence has gotten seperated and is cyrrently with a cannibal mutant attractive woman, although he doesn’t know. Bones has gone to look for him while Stig and Angelica try to find a way to repair Port Side Station’s bell and put them back in normal time. Back to Main Page
