Daniel Brown, b. ca. 2/13/1799 Germany and d. 8/3/1849 ae 51y5m17d in Moravia, Cayuga Co, buried there in Hall Cemetery, Moravia. He was ill with cholera one day and died. He married in Germany, to Elizabeth Heitsman b. ca. 1794 , and came to the US about 1830 with his wife and his daughter, Elizabeth. In December 1981, I received a response on an query to the Herkimer County Historical Society, Mrs. Andrew W. Patrick, Librarian, who had this to pass on: "I think your Daniel is the one in our Reformed Church records. He was Daniel Brown from Zinsweiler, Canton Niedebroun and his wife was Elizabeth Heitsmann (Heidemann, Heilsmann) from the same town of the Dept. of Rhenish, France (Alsace-Lorraine). They had Catherine b. 10/5/1830 bpt 3/20/1831 sp: parents; Margareth b. 8/4/1832 bpt 10/14/1832 sp: parents; Philip b. 3/11/1834 bpt 7/13/1834 sp: Petro Klein, Barbara Schaeffner, wf Michael, all from Germany; Peter 10/28/1836 bpt 6/18/1836 sp: parents..."(Autobiography of Hugh Wetzel Lester: "I stated ... that my grandfather, Dorwin Lester, married Catherine Brown, July 11,1852. I do not know the given name of Grandmother's father. He lived in Herkimer County, New York. He was of German descent, whether of the same migration and source of the "Pennsylvania Germans," I do not know. He was a farmer. I do not know the maiden name of his wife. Germany, res. here 65 y: Parents: Daniel & Elizabeth Brown, both of Germany. She is buried Twelve Corners Cemetery, Niles: Adam Forbes 1831-1895, Elizabeth, his wife 1825-1895; Mary Jane d/o Adam and Elizabeth Forbes d. 10/4/1865 ae 7y7m24d; Frederick L., s/o Adam & Elizabeth Forbes d. 5/15/1865 ae 1y11m (Autobiography of Hugh Wetzel Lester: "Elizabeth Brown born about 1823, married Adam Forbes and had nine children, as follows: Daniel, who had a daughter; Frank who was married but had no children; Charles who had one daughter; Catherine whose further history I do not know; Mary Jane who died as a child; Adam, known as "Ad," who had a daughter who in turn had two sons; a son whose first name I do not know, but who was nicknamed, "Leather," and who died in infancy, Will who married a woman whose surname was Rosencranz and who had a son and a daughter; and a daughter, whose first name I do not know, who had a daughter.")
Catherine Brown b. 12/5/1831 NY ; age 29 in 1850 census; d. 4/21/1913 Jackson Co., Minn.; m. Dorwin Lester 7/11/1852, Moravia. They had five children: Ervin F., Doretta, Frank, Katie and Mattie Lester. Their history is covered in her grandson's autobiography, along with information on the Lesters. I am the granddaughter of Hugh Wetzel Lester.
Margaret Brown b. ca. 1833; not in 1850 census with widow Elizabeth and brothers and sisters at the home of Daniel and Lois Reynolds, of Moravia.(Autobiography of Hugh Wetzel Lester: Margaret m. Burr Walker and had one daughter named Orcelia, she m. a Heald and they had one daughter.)
Philip Brown b. 1835; age 16 in 1850 census; (Autobiography of Hugh Wetzel Lester: Phillip married a woman whose family name was Rosencranz and had one child, Hattie. Hattie Brown married Bert Randall and had no children.) Buried Indian Mound Cemetery, Moravia, NY: Philip Brown 1835-1919, Margaret, his wife 1842-1916; Randall, Albert 1862(-); Hattie E. Peter Brown b. 1836; age 14 in 1850 census; (Autobiography of Hugh Wetzel Lester : Peter had two sons, George Brown, who had a son and a daughter; and Charles Brown who married a woman named Emma and they had a daughter, Florence who married Theron R. Brown, no relation, and they had twin daughters.) Indian Mound Cemetery has these inscriptions together: Brown, Peter 1836-1923; Phebe E. his wife 1842-1909; Margaret E. 1792-1882; Louis D. son of Peter and Phebe d. 10/21/1882 ae 6 months; Headstones: Mary, George. (Pat Walker notes: I think Margaret E. is Elizabeth Brown, Peter's mother, Elizabeth Heitsman Brown, she may have been Margaret Elizabeth)
The Autobiography of Hugh Wetzel Lester printed privately by his children in 1979 is a recollection of his life. All notations from his book are noted by parenthesis, the rest was gleaned from my Cayuga and Herkimer County research since 1981 and what has been made available on the Cayuga County NYGENWEB.
