X2 explodes onto the screen with new characters and more action. Don't all sequels? The movie does shift attention more towards certain characters than in the first. The movie opens with an attemped assassination on the life of the President by a mutant - Nightcrawler. He's blue, he's bad, and he teleports. The movement towards a real division and war between mutants and humans is growing. Magneto escapes, and while he is the nemesis of the X-men, his motives aren't as extreme as a new villian who wants to steal the power of cerebro and harness it to kill every living mutant. He holds the key to Wolverine's past in how he came to be...and perhaps, who he once was.

Characters that seem to receive more character development here are Dr. jean Grey, Storm and Iceman. Less on Rogue and Cyclops. But because there are so many lead characters, it becomes quite a juggling act. A raid takes place at Professor Xaviers school led by William Stryker, who is determined to rid the earth of mutants once and for all. A few manage to escape. Stryker has developed a drug used to control mutants, and he takes Xavier in hopes of using him to kill all mutants through cerebro. One of those he tried to control, Nightcrawler, now is banded with the X-men in their fight to stop this villian.

Wolverine becomes torn between the need to know the truth of who he is with the duty of doing whatever it takes to take out Stryker. He also finds he is not so unique when Deathstryke, a vampish lady with long sharp nails matches up against him. Wolverine sure gets his butt kicked by alot of chicks doesn't he? Overall X2 is fun-filled with lots of action, it's a great popcorn flick for the summer. The special effects are well done, the story goes to exploit the human condition. Almost a modern day "planet of the apes" in exposing prejudices that arise when the threat of an inbalance of power happens with a group of people finding their freedoms. Yeah well, it's not that deep! There's a bit of a suprise at the end, too. And yes, expect to sit in a crowd of X-Men geeks who may erupt in applause at various scenes, or tear the film to pieces with observations. For now I'll say it's a decent sequel, but not one I felt had to be made. But then what is a sequel, but a movie that is simply capitalizing from the success of the original? No brainer entertainment, and I gotta give sci-fi props, it's one of my favorite genre's so the more we can see in theaters the better. Was it worth the money? Why not. Was it a great film? Not quite. It did fall short, but the youngsters will like it.
