The public is obsessed with celebrity couple Gwen Harrison (Jones) and Eddie Thomas (Cusack) who married, starred in films together and became "America's Sweethearts". Unfortunately when their marriage ended, so seemed their career did too. Carrying a film on their own became hard because of their association with eachother. But one last film that has yet to be released is their last hope to regain ground in Hollywood. Nobody has seen the film as the director (Christopher Walken) is keeping it a secret to reveal at one of those public press functions. Billy Crystal plays a publicist who tries to create a secluded place for this function to occur, pamper the foriegn associated press and create a little "talk" about his two celebs getting back together in hopes it will work to their advantage in promoting the film. Then we have Kiki (Roberts) who is Gwen's sister and assistant. She used to be fat, now she's not. We're supposed to see her as the frumpy girl who helped build her sisters glamor and career while sacrificing her own happiness. (boo hoo) The film foiled in many ways. It was boring from the get-go...and only seemed to pick up at the very END. The actors seemed exaggerated, I know it's a comedy but it didn't flow naturally. Another peeve I noticed was every scene had music, whether loud or simply in the background. I realized in a court of law one might object and called this "Leading", as it seemed placed there to keep changing with each scene trying to actually stir some emotion in us or force us to feel more for the characters or scene than we do. Will they get back together, while there seems to be sparks between Eddie and Kiki? Who cares. WHen the funniest part of a movie involves a doberman sniffing someone's crotch, you've really reached a low point. I didn't flunk the film entirely, it hads it's few isolated moments but it was a complete mess. And another thing, Julia Roberts is Julia Roberts in every film. She's just the same person with a different hairstyle, where's the character development here? For that matter where's the plot. Whoever put this together was doing so in hopes of luring folks to the theater (once again) with some big celebrity names and a promise of romance. It was very soap-operish..and I hate soap operas. I like John Cusack, but usually for the offbeat roles he takes. I'm not sure i'm warming up to his appearing in all these commercially appealing romantic comedies. A word of advise Cusack...come back to the dark side. Spare yourself the agony of this movie and spend an evening pulling toenails. It's less painful. |
