| Peter parker has the weight of the world on his shoulders. His gift has allowed him to feel accomplished in helping others, by the same token it has hurt those he loves. He wants to reveal his true feelings for Mary Jane, but to do so puts her in danger. He knows it to be a selfish act to have his cake and eat it too. He is now facing a time in his life when he must make the right choice, but we then begin to wonder, does he really have one?
Peter is a pizza delivery guy who gets fired, lives alone in a rundown apartment and can't make his rent, and while an extremely bright student he is struggling in school. His professor thinks he's lazy, his friends and family find him to be undependable, never punctual and a complete mystery. This is a more grown up view of Spiderman, less idealistic and more realistic. The audience can relate to this guy. But the reason he's a failure in his personal life is that he's between two worlds and because he truly doesn't know what he wants or who is he is, he can never be a complete person. There is too much doubt in here he belongs that he begins to doubt who he is. .That might explain his occasional loss of power. Professor Otto Octavius is a brilliant scientist ready to show the world an experiment which will revolutionize the way we use energy. To help conduct the experiment he created artificial intelligence in a set of mechanical arms that attatch to his back. The only thing that keeps them from taking over and controlling his mind is this safety chip which, of course, gets busted. While he is the villian in the movie, he is not directly after Spiderman, although he needs him in order to get what he needs to complete the failed experiment. Meanwhile Mary jane announces she is to marry, and peter finds himself ready to give up his hero status. He feels responsible for those around him who are hurt, and yet he cannot even share his feelings with anyone. Perhaps this sequel could have appropriately been taglined "Unmasked". It deals more with the reality of what he chose to give up, our lives chosen paths and taking risks. Dr. Octo is a far better villian than the Green Goblin, who personally got on my nerves with all that snivelling and lunacy - although granted I love Dafoe otherwise. The little kids may think this is a cool film, but the grown-ups will be rewarded with a really layered and emotionally driven film. What's nice is it didn't make being a superhero such a cool thing, instead it focuses on the simple things in life and how they are stuff that dreams are made of, even for superheroes. |
