OCEANS 11

Stars: George Clooney, Andy Garcia,  Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Elliot Gould, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner
Rated: PG-13
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Score: 8.5/10

An all-star cast like this is sometimes the kiss of death for a film, a box office draw that doesn't satisfy. But "oceans 11" has got enough class to get by. A remake of an earlier film starring 'the rat pack', this film kicks off in high gear with Daniel Ocean (Clooney) deciding to pull the job of a lifetime just after his prison release. He wants to knock off not 1, but 3 casino's in one night. The only way he can do it is to organize a team of the best.  Rusty Ryan (Pitt) is a close friend that realizes  Ocean may be doing this to get revenge, since his estranged wife is now dating the casino king Terry Benedict (Garcia) whose casino's he plans to rob during a big boxing match.

The plan they have is pretty elaborate and not a mistake can be made. The great thing is this film drops some big casino names - it's always hard to get permission from casinos to use them in films but it makes the film. And in the end I chuckled at the thought that the audience is rooting for the criminals. Tess (Roberts) feels that Daniel returns in her life to win her back, but then suspects that he's up to something else.
There's alot of nice dialogue going on, and every actor seems to really know who they are as they have a strong presense and high confidence. We are introduced to each character as they are recruited. A nice scene comes from Gould, who explains the most successful Casino robberies every pulled (each showing to be a complete failure) as the camera shows a play-by-play on all. He is not successfull in talking them out of their plans.
Frankly people are going to see this film, and not going to see it, for all the wrong reasons. Women who go simply because Clooney and Pitt are in it may not enjoy it if they don't like these type of films. Then there may be guys who will pass on this because they don't like these "pretty boy" actors. But this is an entertaining film that you shouldn't pass up. "Oceans Eleven" is one of the few examples of films that I can truly call an ENSEMBLE movie. I didn't really feel any one actor hogged screentime, there was alot of equal ground here and in the end I almost felt like Garcia stole the show. The look is very hot and edgy but with an execution of class and style.
Oh, and just when you think it's over and start to get up? Sit down! The way that scene went made it kind of funny, I'm not sure if they intentionally built it up as an ending or not...but alot of people started to get up thinking it was over. ;-)   Recommended
