| JURASSIC PARK III Stars: Sam Neill, William H. Macey, Tei Leoni Rated: PG-13 Score 7.5/10 The first Jurassic Park brought us something we'd never seen - real looking dinosaurs. But the characters were weak, and dialogue..well...corny. The sequel had a bad plot, including a dinosaur loose in California. Which would make it hard for moviegoers to want to pay to see yet another sequel. But get out your cash, because this movie is fun. It's the "popcorn" flick of the summer. It's not philosophical, it doesn't try to be too much of a serious movie. We're not looking for Oscar contendor, but it ranks high in good fun. It's not long, it knows when to end and it delivers what it promises. The characters are better, because they don't try too hard to be too serious, it seems like they're just having fun with it. The script is written so it's not too thick, dramatic, and seems relevent to each scene. Dinosaurs are still roaming the earth - well on a little island that is used as a giant laboratory for research. Unfortunately that didn't go as planned and they're simply existing. A young boy (Trevor Morgan) ends up missing on this island after a para-sailing adventure to look at dinosaurs..gone wrong. His parents (William H. Macey and Tei Leoni) lead archeologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill) to the island under false pretences. But uh oh, they all become stranded! Revelations as to the advanced intelligence of the raptors is discovered, and well a whole lot of action going on. You will jump, no doubt about it. The dinosaurs look amazingly more realistic than the first two. I found in Jurassic 2 they looked worse than the first, but the third outdid themself - even tho I'm against the overuse of computer generated effects in movies today. It is a little improbable that some young kid survives on the island for all those weeks. Beware: if any movie places a kid between 9-11 he'll always be the smartest one and survive. It has some scary scenes, a bit graphic like the previous ones. I actually liked part III better than the first two - it is what it is and doesn't try to be something more. It's just summer entertainment. Fun, a no-brainer, with new dinos. Even seemed to poke a little fun at the prior ones and itself. So many movies lately have left moviegoers slounching in their chairs and staring at their watches. This one had more of a feel of a b-movie, or those old "journey to the center of the earth" flicks...except with better effects. I was a little uneasy with the ending, as all flicks leave room for yet another sequel. But they seemed so non-chalant about realizing the dinosaurs will probably eventually take over the planet. So if you want to have a thrill, see something that is excitement from start to finish, take an hour and a half out of your day and revisit "Jurassic Park " (III-times the charm). |
