| It was a dark and stormy night..... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "Identity" starts off as one of those great murder-mysteries, a "who-done-it" of sorts where a killer is on the prowl and any one of the main characters could be it. Ten strangers in a rainstorm seek shelter at the only place available, roads are flooded and this cheap motel is the only alternative. A roadside accident brings two sets of strangers into the picture, others who drift in include a cop and his prisoner, a newlywed and a call girl. It doesn't take long before they realize the danger they are in, trapped by the floodwaters, one-by-one they each are murdered. The only clue is a room key found in each victims hand - that numerically goes down in a countdown of sorts. John Cusack stars as a limo driver (Ed) escorting a once popular celebrity played by Rebecca De Mornay, when they are involved in a roadside accident with a family. The interesting detail of the film is how we get to view each scene happen through another persons eyes so as each person is introduced we fully understand the scenes in which we watched. They find a nearby motel for shelter and realize that the phones don't work. Little by little each character ends up at this stop - which will ultimately be their last. |

| They attribute the killings to a prisoner who managed to get away from officer Rhodes (Ray Liotta), who doesn't really seem to know as much as Ed, who used to be a cop himself. He is trying to solve the mystery, and the only way to do that is to learn the secret each person carries. The secret that is their common bond. But is it enough to save their lives? Overall the film was highly suspenseful, it was intriguing to guess what would happen next and who could possibly committing the crimes and for what motive. |

| Too early on however we discover the "Secret", which is very interesting - however because so much of the storyline continues to follow it, it loses it's punch. I have to admit the end was a little difficult for me to swallow, something I might expect from a Stephen King movie, but from a psychological standpoint I guess it makes sense. I think it might have been better if they actually saved it for the end and not dwelled so much on the main character. It's a dark little film, you almost feel cold and wet from all the rain in the film that creates a very good atmosphere for a suspense flick. It was a decent movie - but with an unsatisfying climax. A Good thriller that lost it's thrill. |
