| Just who is Prot? He seems to have come from nowhere and ends up in a psychiatric hospital. Yet - yet he doesn't seem crazy. He just says that he's an alien. And quite believable is his tale that even his psychiatrist, Dr. Powell, begins to question all that he knows to be possible. Prot has a remarkable influence on fellow patients in the hospital, who believe his story. He seems to have a special way of getting through to them more than any psychiatrist ever could. So much so that the patient begins to want to cure themself, rather than wait for someone do to it for them. Dr. Powell decides to put Prot under hypnosis to find out the truth, yet finding out the truth makes the story even more complicated. Because in the end, it is possible for Prot to be a man who had a very traumatic experience in his life that perhaps put him in this mental state. Yet it is equally possible that maybe an alien did leap in his body for a temporary time, because what exactly lies in the subconcious is a mystery. And there the movie leaves us with our own decision on what we wish to see. Because it doesn't give an answer, and that is appealing. In some instances it could really hurt a picture but in this case I liked it. Because I was satisfied with either possibility. But I felt the film to be a bit too self righteous...as if it were trying to say we should be lucky to be in the presense of such greatness..lol. Ok, well I AM a critic! Where does the film flaw? Well besides the fact the title sounds more like a femine protection product than a planet - Bridges sometimes comes across as artificially caring in his performances. The patients in the hospital seem stereotypical. And Prots sensitivity to ultraviolet light in which humans cannot detect - you can't fake that so you could see it as a giveaway of who he is. The story is plausable, yet it has it's holes. While the ending opens up the door to two possible explanations, it has some facts layed out early on that make it hard to be that debatable. It was enjoyable but I wasn't engrossed in the story. It trodded along and doesn't really leave the audience with a sense that they saw something really special. |
