A recent addition to the tree is the Ashley family of New Jersey. The Ashleys came to the United States from Bath, England in the mid-19th century. William Holbrook Ashley arrived here with his wife, Tryphenia Attwell in 1850. One of their sons, Hubert John Ashley married Hannah Kunick, whose father Anton Kunigh immigrated from Konigsburg, Germany. I have very good information on the Ashleys, including photographs, letters, wills and Anton Kunigh's Reis-Pass from Germany.
From Lenis Ashley's notes:
Our grandfather, William Holbrook Ashley was born in Bath, England on October 14, 1819. He was the second of six children born to William and Hannah Holbrook Ashley. The children were as follows: Hannah Louisa, William Holbrook, Clara Eliza, James Henry, Amy Jane and John Holbrook Ashley. In 1826, the family lived at 4 Daniel St., Sydney Place, Bath.
Hannah Louisa married Vyse or Vignes, a minister; their son Charles (?) was an officer in the Boer War; his daughter, Louisa Emma, lived in Bath and was living in 1916 at the time of death of Amy Jane Ashley.
Clara and Amy lived together in Bath until Clara's death, and Amy continued to live there until her death. She left by her will the house in which she had lived, 41 Park Street, to Louisa Emma Vignes.
James Henry, called Henry, lived with his brother William in New Jersey; he was said to have been employed by the Bank of England, and to have made secret trips for the Bank; he came in one wash-day morning, took his clothes from the wash-tub and went away, but could not tell the family where he was going, and he never returned.
Edward Thomas moved to Illinois; his first wife was called "Aunt Lib". His had seven children by his second wife, Anna Rathburn.
Eventually all four Ashley brothers came to the United States. The first was William Holbrook, around 1850, followed by John, Edward amd James. In the information I have on the family there is quite a bit of information on the Earl of Shaftesbury which I haven't sorted through yet.
