The Mindy Interview (6/24/00)

On June 24, 2000, Mindy Feldman made an appearance at the Hollywood Collectors Show. I did a little impromptu interview, though I admit I'm certainly no interviewer:

KT: What part did you play in "General Hospital"? And what year was it about?

MF: Probably I would guess about '86, '87.

KT: And how many episodes were you in?

MF: Quite a few, probably about 10 or 11, 10 to 12, somewhere around there. I don't remember what the character's name was because it wasn't that important to the part, believe it or not. Basically, there was a teen center where a lot of teens were homeless -- not homeless but kind of after school type thing -- hung out, they were a part of the whole storyline. And I was one of the teenagers on the show.

KT: Do you have any mementos from the Mickey Mouse Club years? I heard they didn't let you take anything home.

MF: Unfortunately, I really have very little to show for any of that. Basically, I only have what people have been given me, sending me, stuff like that. I appreciate I everything I get, but unfortunately I don't have a lot to show.

KT: How are your memories of those years way back when, are they pretty good or just pick and choose a few things that you remember?

MF: Yes, my memories are wonderful from that. Most of them anyway, for the most part. But as far as the show goes, they were all very good. Yeah, I have great memories, I have a lot of quality memories and a lot of very close friendships that I formed. It was more like a family than anything else. I'll always remember that time as wonderful.

KT: You were about 7 when you started?

MF: Yeah, I was 7 when I started and it went on for quite awhile as far as putting the shows on at Disneyland and then our Florida trip and all that. It lasted for quite a few years and those were very formidable years and they meant a lot to me.

KT: Do you do any live theatre nowadays?

MF: I have done quite a bit, but at the current time I'm not because I have a two-year-old, so it's hard for me to get away on a nightly basis or anything like that. But I do hope to again in the future, definitely, I enjoy it.

KT: Do you have anything in the works that we can look for?

MF: Well, there's a few things that I'm trying to put together. I'm not ready to say one way or the other yet, but I do hope to, there are a few things that I definitely hope to be presenting in the near future.

KT: Anything ever funny or unexpected ever happen to you during one of the live shows at Disneyland?

MF: During the shows at Disneyland . . . Yeah, as a matter of fact. One time, Nita and I for whatever reason we were singing "We're Children" and for whatever reason we both just started cracking up. It was so funny then, whatever it was, and we were just laughing hysterically, we had to still finish the song, and everybody was on stage with us. We got off stage and we were just laughing and laughing and they got so mad at us because they said we ruined everything. It was so funny though, I think everybody in the audience started laughing, too. I don't know what we were laughing about, but it was funny at the time. That was my funniest memory that I can remember, screwing up very badly.

KT: What about this "Me and Maxx" show? Was it a recurring role or were you on just once?

MF: Yeah, I was on a few episodes. It was a TV show on NBC and I was like, one of the girls that was a regular on it, I was one of her friends.

KT: Remember the character's name that you played?

MF: Nope.

KT: I remember you celebrated your tenth birthday at the Disneyland shows. I wasn't there that day. Do you remember it at all?

MF: I believe so, was that the time that they did skywriting?

KT: Oh, I haven't heard about that!

MF: Yeah, I think that was -- unless it was a different year -- I think that was probably my tenth birthday. I still have no idea who did it. It was really bizarre. They just said "Come out here, come out here, they wrote your name in the sky!" Somebody was skywriting "Happy Birthday Mindy" in the sky.

KT: I bet that was that year.

MF: But nobody ever told me who did it!

KT: And after you did the live shows at Disneyland, did you have enough time to have some fun yourself and were you bothered a lot or was it OK?

MF: You mean at Disneyland, or do you mean . . .?

KT: Yeah, when you were done with the shows, or before the shows . . .

MF: As I was explaining to them earlier, the one cool thing about doing it at Disneyland is that they didn't make us wait to go on the rides [laughs] because we didn't have a lot of time to wait. So we would go do a ride and we'd go right to the back to get on. So between shows, we'd go on the rides and stuff like that.

KT: You have security with you?

MF: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we really . . . we didn't hang out too much in the park without . . . without security, we weren't even allowed to go anywhere. We got to have a little bit of fun.

KT: The last time I saw you was, remember those May Co. appearances, I think you were there, it was in Oceanside and San Diego. . . did you do anything with the other guys after that? Because I know they did the '80 shows but they just had certain . . .

MF: The thing about the whole time period is that it's hard to remember what was before what or after what because I was so young when I started . . . so I don't know what I did after or before so I can't tell you if I did something . . .

KT: Has Disney contacted you lately? I heard that they contacted Scott and Todd about something about a CD-Rom, they wanted to use their images on something.

MF: No, they haven't.

KT: I just got the impression that Disney likes to keep in contact with all its people . . . they want to make sure they have your correct address and all that so they can contact you.

MF: I did get one person that works for Disney telling me that somebody from Disney was going to be calling me but they haven't ....

KT: Thanks.
