CLASSES - SPRING TERM 2009
starting mid-February

Information for new students
New classes at Hogsmeade High
Standard programme

New classes at Hogsmeade High

Ancient myth

I would post the myth, and the class would analyze the symbols, meanings and purpose of the
myths. I'm still trying to flesh it out, but if anyone is interested I would love to know.

Professor Aibhilinn, Slytherin

The Language of Dreams

Freud called dreams "the royal road to the subconscious". For a witch, dreams are much more than just daily thoughts and stress being processed; the dreaming world is as important as the waking world. Australian Aboriginals even use the term "Dreaming" to refer to a person's whole spirituality.
In this class, you will keep a dream journal, train yourself to remember your dreams and interpret their symbolic language, learn about lucid dreaming (i.e. becoming aware that you are dreaming) and, if you wish, learn some basic dream magic (such as protection spells against nightmares).
Professor Charlie, Slytherin

History of Magick

No, this is not going to be the boring stuff Professor Binns is teaching. This class will explore the roots of magick in the Muggle world. What makes a witch? What real witches  (male or female) have had an impact on our notion of the magickal? What did different times and cultures understand by the term "magick"?
We are also going to have a look at one of the darkest chapters in history, the so-called "witch hunts". I am going to draw on my visit to an exhibition at a village museum that used to be a prison in which people accused of witchcraft used to be imprisoned and tried.
You won't have to do any real magick in this class, but I would recommend an open mind.
Professor Charlie, Slytherin

Standard programme:

The following classes are part of our standard programme. They will be offered as long as there are at least 3 students who sign up for the class. Disciplines of Magick will take place in any case.

Information for new students: Disciplines of Magick

This class is mandatory for all students in their first term who have not yet completed any classes at HH.

This orientation class gives you a brief overview of all subjects offered at HH. Each lesson is dedicated to one discipline of magick and is held by the respective teacher.
Students must submit at least 50% of assignments to be admitted to the NEWTs (i.e. you don't have to practice magick actively to fulfill course requirements).
You may not normally sign up for other classes while you have not completed DM.

Ancient Runes I

"Now Ancient Runes. That's a fascinating subject."
                                     (Hermione Granger, PoA)

Prerequisites: students must have their own rune sets by the second week of term (see Details)

Runes are the magical symbols of an ancient mythical culture. Healing, magic, divination, ethics, character traits, protection and meditation - just a few of the topics that will be introduced in this class. If you wish to have a deeper understanding of runes, you ought to know about their historical roots and myths. But this will only be the beginning of an exciting journey into the past.

Ancient Runes II

Prerequisites: successful completion of Ancient Runes I.

Now that you have developed a basis for working with runes, we will dig deeper into rune magick, the role of runes in Norse mythology and Asatru, and we will learn about some more unusual aspects of working with runes, such as runic Martial arts.

Professor Charlie, Slytherin

Arithmancy

"God created the whole numbers - everything else is the work of man." There is a lot of wisdom in this quote by the mathematician Leonard Kronenberg. Numbers shape our world. This is why great minds are drawn to them magically, for example Hermione Granger. If you register for this class, you'll never look at a number the same way as before. If you would like to know what the final outcome of a numerological analysis looks like, see a sample analysis done by a student of this class here.

Spellwork: no
Supplies needed: your brain ;-)

Lord Saris-ap-Llewellyn, Hufflepuff

Charms and Spells I

There is a spell for almost all walks of life: protection, health, wealth, mending a broken friendship, finding a lost object, bring out your inner beauty, almost anything's possible. Many books on the subject tell you to buy exotic ingredients or perform complicated rituals, while the simplest of spells may be the most effective for your intent. In this class you are going to learn the basics of spellcraft; otherwise, you may be disappointed because the new job you asked for is offered in Melbourne while you live in Texas.

City Magick
"Bless the seeds you put into the ground to get an abundant harvest", "Pour the potion into the nearest river", "Perform this ritual in the woods, skyclad" ---- magick comes from rural societies that lived close to nature, and many modern books on the subject seem to be written under the impression that we can turn back the clock. But what about the modern witch with an office job, who lives in her 21st century skyscraper apartment, complete with colour TV and broadband internet? This is the class for her.
Professor Charlie, Slytherin

Defence Against the Dark Arts I

This class teaches defensive techniques to block spells, charms, curses, hexes and jinxes cast by other wizards, counteract the Dark Arts, and to protect from dark magickal beasts and creatures such as the Boggart. There is a pattern to the fates of the previous professors? I haven't noticed.

Divination

Divination is not to be confused with fortune-telling, i.e. making doubtful predictions of the future that may or may not come to pass for fun or entertainment purposes. The true purpose of serious divination is to allow us to gain insights into situations, ourselves and others, and ideally encourage responsibility to respond accordingly. The tools used in divination are a medium through which we gain access to a higher level of awareness. allow us to gain insights into situations, ourselves and others, and ideally encourage responsibility to respond accordingly. The tools used in divination are a medium through which we gain access to a higher level of awareness.

In this course we will learn some of the most well-known and some of the more obscure techniques of divination. Topics include tea leaves and coffee reading, palmistry, scrying, basic astrology and cartomancy, dream interpretation, feng shui, i ching, divination with marbles, the pendulum, smoke and candle shadows.

InterFaith Studies I: The Ancient Gods of Europe

We are living in a modern world shaped by Christian tradition, so the concept of many different deities is no longer as familiar as it used to be in the ancient Pagan world.  This class is the first one in a series, focusing on Europe, with a focus on Greek, Roman and Norse deities, while later classes will take us to other continents as well. A large part of this class is the study of mythologies, so prospective students should be prepared to do a certain amount of reading per week.

Voyages With Vampires
Ever been followed by a mysterious figure in a dark alley who seemed particularly interested in your blood group? What is a hawthorn stake good for? Do those creatures of the night really sleep in coffins? Do they have an obsession with counting or untying knots? Were there vampires in ancient Egypt? What is a loogaroo? Did Joss Whedon just make up Angelus or was there some truth to the story of Buffy's vampire lover? If you've always wanted to know the answers to these questions, this might just be the class for you.
