Discussion Guidelines

This message board is shared by Women of Gotham and CanaryNoir.com, the delectable duo that make up the Birds of Prey Partnership. On behalf of CanaryNoir's webmistress Jennifer and I (Laura), let me just lay down a few guidelines to make your experience at Words of Prey enjoyable for everyone -- especially you.

Naturally, we'd like a lot of conversation to centre on the Birds of Prey, other women of Gotham, and women in comics, but I hate it when message boards try to restrict the topics of conversation to "the topic of my website, or nothing." So you can talk about anything you want... just keep in mind that the reason I originally got this message board was so we could have a forum to intelligently discuss female comic book characters and women in the industry.

That being said, there are some things we won't tolerate: profanity, X-rated or obscene conversations, bigotry or hate speech. We'd like this forum to be for a general audience, which includes children and those of us who don't like reading cuss-riddled posts. Keep it clean, or you'll get deleted. Repeated offenses will lead to banning from the board.

Be civil to each other! Do not harrass, maliciously attack or slander other people in your posts. Especially other posters. Debate and disagree all you want, but don't turn it into a personal flame war.

Don't impersonate other posters! That's just rude, and nobody will laugh. Trust me.

Do not use this board to promote your business, unless your business happens to be the production of comic books. No SPAM, no get-rich-quick schemes. These messages will get deleted almost immediately, so there's really no point in trying.

Violation of any of the above guidelines will result in the deletion of the offending message(s) by one of the co-moderators (Jennifer or I). Serious or repeated violations will also result in banning from the board. The co-moderators hold the right to exercise their discretion and authority in these instances.

This message board allows HTML coding, so feel free to italicize and bold to your heart's content.

However, please do not post pictures on the board. In your message, provide a link to your picture on whatever server the picture is on. Small website banners (as long as they meet the other guidelines of the board regarding obscenity, slander or commercial gain) are acceptable.

Have FUN! We look forward to many exciting conversations with you.

And if you have any questions or comments about the Words of Prey message board, or if there's any inappropriate behaviour on the board you'd like to draw our attention to, please don't hesitate to e-mail me (Laura).

Get Involved!

A sense of community has developed at the Words of Prey board. Several posters have mentioned that ours is one of the friendliest and most thoughtful message boards they've visited. I agree -- and the board's success is due to the wonderful people who, in the words of one poster, "play in our sandbox."

We try to both welcome newcomers and foster a sense of ownership and community on the board. As moderator of the board, I've introduced a couple of new features that enable both newcomers and old vets to be even more involved in this modest web community.

Words of Prey Community Pages allow posters to get to know each other. Anyone who posts at Words of Prey -- no matter how new -- can have a biography page. Bio pages are brief (no more than 500 words), but you can include pictures, links, book or movie recommendations, favourites, whatever you want -- well, as long as they fit within the guidelines above, that is. Create one and e-mail it to me.

Best of the Board, another feature of the Community Pages, is a message archive chronicling the board's shining moments and most thought-provoking, touching, or funniest posts. Who decides what posts are saved for posterity? You do. How? If you read a post that stands out in quality or importance, post a reply beneath it (or a new message) saying, "I nominate this post for Best of the Board," or some such. If one other poster seconds your nomination, then I'll publish the nominated post on Best of the Board.

Watch for more ways to get involved at Words of Prey, as soon as Jennifer and I think them up.

Enjoy!

Yes, I realize "Words of Prey" is the name of the Birds of Prey lettercol. It isn't plagiarism; I honestly didn't know that was its name until someone later pointed it out. Silly me, I thought I was being clever and original. Oh well. It's still a darn good name for a message board. All graphics and text on this page are copyrighted by Laura Hysert and Jennifer A. Ford.
