Joanne Seale Wilson is looking for information about Alfred Whitaker who designed Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas in 1871.
He had emigrated from England to Texas where he founded a nursery and seed business.
He is in the 1880 census of Houston with his wife Courtenay and 5 children.
In the census, "A. Whitaker" is said to be a "florist", aged 46.  So he would have been born about 1834.
He disappears after that.
The rumor is that he was a remittance man sent to Texas - but who knows?

Any leads?
Do you know what happened to Alfred Whitaker?

James Whitaker is hoping that someone might please help him get over a dead end.
William Butler Whitaker, born 1814 in Nottingham married Mary Ann Brewster in 1836.

Their son, also named William Butler Whitaker, was born 1840, married Mary Ann May, and died in 1911.
He started off as a plumber and ended his life as a Civil Engineer concerned with Gas Works.
The Institute of Civil Engineers informed Jim that William Butler Whitaker was, in his lifetime, in charge of the gasworks at
Bombay, Donnington Park, Belper and finally Buenos Aries, Argentina.

With the help of
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jnth/index.htm
Jim was able to trace his family in Buenos Aries and find additions to his family.

William Butler Whitaker returned to England and was featured on the 1901 census;-
Almagro,  9 Vanbrugh Park Road West, Blackheath, Kent.
William Butler Whitaker - head - 60 - civil engineer - born Nottingham
Mary Ann - wife - 61 - born Nottingham
Margaret May - dau - 20 - born Argentine Republic - British subject
Gladys Beryl - dau - 17 - born Argentine Republic - British subject

William Butler died in 1911 and in his will he left everything to his wife.
There was no mention of his two sons, Frank Brewster Whitaker (civil engineer) and Harold Digby Whitaker.
They were both with him in Argentina, but Jim can find nothing about them anywhere after 1900.
Obviously he is intrigued to find their destiny.

Are you related to Frank Brewster Whitaker or Harold Digby Whitaker ?
Do you know anything about either of them ?

Ernest Whitaker is trying to trace his family tree but needs some help.
So far he knows that his great grandfather was Henry Whitaker born about 1834 in Macclesfield, Cheshire
Henry Whitaker married Anne Naish in Bristol in 1859 and gave his father's name as Henry Whitaker a "silk manufacturer"

Upon his marriage to Anne, Henry was disowned by his family.  Sadly, he died in 1865 leaving three children:
William Whitaker (grandfather of Ernest),
George Whitaker who emigrated to Connecticut
Albert Whitaker who emigrated to New Zealand

Although Ernest has been able to trace what happened to Henry's family following his marriage to Anne, he has drawn a blank on his parents and any brothers or sisters.

Knowing that Henry was born about 1834, son of Henry, we have found a possible family on the 1851 census living in Hulme, Lancashire:-
HO 107/2221, ED 2z, folio 696
26 White Street, Hulme, Lancashire
Henry Whitaker - head - married - 63 - clerk, sugar refining - Cheshire, Macclesfield
Mary - wife - ma - 60 - Cheshire, Macclesfield
George - son - m - 27 - clerk, merchants office - Cheshire, Banion ?
Ellen - dau in law - 22 - Cheshire, B...?
Mary - dau - unmarried - 21 - Cheshire, B...?
James - son - unm - 19 - clerk, merchants office - Cheshire, Macclesfield
Henry - son - unm - 17 - clerk, accountanats office - Cheshire, Macclesfield
Joseph - son - unm - 15 - clerk, County court - Cheshire, Macclesfield

Unfortunately, this does not tie in with "silk manufacturer" as his father's occupation.
Is this your family?  Can you help Ernest to prove that this is his family?

If you can help Ernest find his roots
please contact him at:

I have been helping  Linda Nothnagel find her ancestors and with a lot of help from Keith Whitaker we now have a more accurate picture.

Edward Whitaker was born 1831 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.
He married 25 Dec 1851 in St. Peter's, Leeds, to Elizabeth Ingledew
Elizabeth Ingledew was baptized 20 Feb 1833 at Leeds, and was the daughter of Thomas Ingledew and Elizabeth.

Their son, John Whitaker was born 1857 in Birstal, Yorks.
He married Fannie Moat about 1876.  She was born 1859 in Kirkstall, Yorks.

It is believed that two of their children, Jennie Whitaker and John Whitaker were born in England.
Others were, Violet Whitaker, Nellie Whitaker, Lily Whitaker, Agnes Whitaker and
Thomas Ingledew Whitaker
who were all born in the USA.  Thomas was Linda's grandfather and was born 1890 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

We have found the family of Edward and Elizabeth on the UK census and what we now know of Linda's family tree can be found at:

Elaine is researching her Whittaker ancestors in Ireland and Scotland

At the moment she has the family starting with William Whittaker who may have married a Martha.
Children known so far are:-
David Whittaker born about 1840
William Whittaker born about 1858 (or 1868)
Barbara Whittaker born either 1853 or 1866  in Strabane, Donegal, Ireland.

Their father, William Whittaker could have been in Creaghadoos in 1857.

David Whittaker married Eliza Spence in Raphoe and they had a son William Whittaker born 1884 in Strabane.

William Whittaker went to Scotland where he married Emily Jane Courtney.
Their son, William Whittaker married Emily McCourtney in 1905 in Greenock, Scotland

Another place mentioned where this family may have resided is Sheercloon

Elaine would like to hear from anyone who might have recollection of any of the above and hopes that you may be able to swap information.

Don Wilson in New Zealand has a puzzle with his Whittaker family and any help would be very much appreciated.

Joseph Whittaker was born about 1792 at Newthorpe, Nottingham son of John Whittaker, mother unknown.
His first marriage was to Ellen Shelton 13 Dec. 1818 at Greasley, Notts.
A witness to the marriage was one
James Whittaker.

They had the following children, all recorded as being born in Newthorpe or Greasley:-
John Whittaker b. abt. 1819, married Hannah Creswell
Hannah Whittaker b. abt. 1820, died 1838
Ziller/Zillah Whittaker b. 1822 married William Clay in 1844,
Harriet Whittaker b. 1828, married John Clay, brother of William Clay, in 1848,
Robert Whittaker b. abt. 1832, married Hannah Simons in 1855,
Joseph Whittaker b. abt. 1833.  No further information.
James Whittaker b. abt. 1837, married Jane (surname unknown).  They had at least 7 children.

Their father, Joseph Whittaker, died 6 Oct 1865 at Newthorpe and was buried in Greasley.
Ellen Whittaker (nee Shelton) was buried in
Greasley on 4 Sep 1838.

When the 1841 census was taken, the youngest six of the Whittaker children were together at Greasley.
We know their mother had died, but their father was not with them either.  In fact we have been unable to find Joseph in the 1881 census.
Instead, the children were in the residence of a James Whittaker age 45 years, an agricultural labourer, born in Notts

What is the relationship between James Whittaker b. abt. 1796 and Joseph Whittaker b. abt. 1792?  Were they brothers?
And where was the children's father, Joseph Whittaker in 1841?

Has anyone found baptisms for Joseph Whittaker abt. 1792 son of John, or James Whittaker abt. 1796?
Do you have an 1841 census with a Joseph Whittaker born Newthorpe or Notts visiting relatives or working away from home?

On the certificate it states that her birth place was
Huddersfield, Yorkshire
At the time of the marriage she was 22 years old (So guessing she was born about 1836).
Her parents were listed as being John Whitaker & Martha nee Senior.

Then the following year, when her son's birth was registered, she stated that she was born in
(the writing is difficult to read the first part)
D...... Dale, Yorkshire, England.

He was the Surgeon General for the British Army around 1855 in the 69th Composing Group, stationed in Ontario, Canada.

He may have had a daughter or sister named Henrietta Whittaker who married John Robinson (who attended Eton).

Either John H. Whittaker, or perhaps his son, married Mary Catherine Darley.
I have a photo of her where she is identified as The Crown Princess of Prussia and is with her first son William Edward Nelson Whittaker.
I believe the photo to be taken 1861.

Hello Whittakers!

My brick wall is my Great Grandmother, Lucy Ethel WHITAKER
She was erroneously listed in a genealogy book (about Nacogdoches County, Texas, USA
as the daughter of Kittie (Kizziah) Amanda FENLEY and Dr. John WHITAKER
After looking at an online copy of the census in question, the original author and I agreed that this was a bad assumption.

I think that my Lucy may be the daughter of Valentine Columbus "Joe" WHITAKER and Lucy Ann (Lucinda?) FENDLEY/FINLEY/FINDLEY
but I have no proof.

Nacogdoches County, Texas Marriage Records: "Jas. M. JORDAN to Lucy E. WHITAKER Feb. 16, 1896." This matches "family lore."

1900 US Census, Texas, Angelina County, ED #3, Sheet 8A, lines 34-37
Name / Relation / Color / Sex / Date of Birth (month year) / Age at last Birthday / Marital Status / Number of years married / Mother of how many

JORDAN, G? M. / Daughter / White / Female / Dec 1899 / 6m / Single / Texas/ Texas / Texas

James Marion JORDAN is my Great Grandfather. His son, John Raymond JORDAN is my Grandfather.
This all matches "family lore."
After James Marion JORDAN died, Lucy Ethel WHITAKER Jordan married John Barton HANSARD Sr. in 1908.

Lucy's Texas Death Certificate: #14368 County of Walker Registrar's No: 35 City or Precinct No: Pinedale Precinct #2
Full name of Deceased: Mrs. J. B. Hansard
Date of death: Mar 23, 1932

Details are on this page:

If any one can shed light on the real parents of Lucy Ethel WHITAKER Jordan Hansard (which are not on the death certificate!), I would greatly

For quite a few years now, Linda Knott in Connecticut has had a couple of dead ends in her Whitaker family tree.

Samuel Whitaker, son of Thomas Whitaker and Lucy was probably born between October 1879 - January 1880 in Balderton, Nottinghamshire.
The 1891 census shows Samuel, age 11, living with his parents.  We are trying to find out what happened to him after then.

He had a sister, Catherine M. Whitaker who was about one year younger than he.  Linda thinks she has found her in the 1901 census:-
Catherine Whitaker age 20, an assistant teacher and living with her mother, Lucy Whitaker age 52, retired farmer, both born in Newark, Notts.

Do you know what happened to Samuel after 1891?
Have you got a Samuel Whitaker, b. abt. 1879 in your family tree?

Linda's other dead end is Matthew Whitaker, born 23 October 1853 in Dorrington, Lincolnshire, son of James Whitaker and Mary Pinder.

In the 1891 census he was age 37 and living with his parents in Balderton, Notts.
In 1893 he signed with mother's death certificate, but has not been heard of since.
Linda wonders if he might have gone to the U.S.A., but has not been able to verify any Matthew Whitaker listed in the 1900 census.

Is your Matthew Whitaker on the US 1900 census?
Can you identify Linda's Matthew, or help by discounting yours?
Or if Matthew married, do you know of his descendants?

Linda's family history is on her web page at:

The family may have come from Manchester, England.

Ernest C. Whitaker is looking for descendants of :-

William Whittaker and his wife Jane Morrison, circa 1830-1860.
They lived in Ireland, WHERE? Emigrated to Canada @ 1845, settled in Newtonville ONT. CAN.
Jane went to Canada 1 year before Bill. They had 2 children , both lost upon crossover.
Jane's father was
John Morrison. Ernest thinks that both Bill and Jane were born in Ireland and believes the Morrison family left Newtonville Ont. and went to Rochester NY.
It is possible that this Whittaker family came out of either Kent, or Manchester both in England, then emigrated to Ireland during the potato famine.

Any info would help.
