- The Kurtz Case
March 1982, Alvin represented Ella Kurtz a woman with two children, Alanna aged 4 years and Hillary aged 3 years. The state was petitioning to have her parental rights dissolved due to child neglect. Alvin won the case and Kurtz was allowed to have custody of her children. Kurtz, however, concealed the fact that she was an alcoholic. About 4 weeks after the case, Kurtz left the children unattended, while she went to the liquor store. Alanna fell out of the window and died. Hillary was sent to live in foster care. Ella Kurtz eventually stopped drinking and became deeply religious. This was the case that prompted Alvin to represent children (as Laurie Solt figured out). The Kurtz case is revisited in "Causality". This time Hillary Kurtz was petitioning to keep custody of her son, Gregory, who was taken away due to neglect and abuse charges filed by Ella Kurtz. Alvin is assigned the new Kurtz Case. At the hearing, Ella Kurtz shows up to Alvin's astonishment. He continues to represent Hillary, even though he believes neither of the Kurtz women to be competent parents to Gregory. In the end, Gregory is remanded to the custody of Ella Kurtz. Note in "Indian Summer", Alvin recalls another case that made him represent children only. In this case, he represented a couple trying to get custody of their 7 year old daughter. Alvin succeeded. A little later, the girl was found dead in the attic of the home. See the Bloopers and Mini Rants page for my mini rant. - After Alvin was arrested at the massage parlor, the Board at Legal Services removed him from the Board, giving the position to Lulu.["Assuming the Position"]
