Psalms 1:1 - Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." - KJV 1611
His Fruit in His Season
Bro Whitney Belbin

Psalms 1: 3 "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

What does this verse say to us? Who is the "he" that is being referred to in the above verse? That is what we will look at. In order to get a more complete understanding of the verse lets look at verses one and two as well.

Psalms one verse one reads: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."

Blessed means happy, so the man that does the things mentioned above will be a happy man. The man that does these things will be the man that will bring forth his fruit in his season. Lets break the three things mentioned above in Psalms one verse one down even future and look at what the word of God has to say.

Happy is the man that does not take the counsel of the ungodly, he is the one that does not go and seek direction or advice from the worldly crowd. He does not seek counsel from the crowd who only seeks wisdom from those whose wisdom is earthly.

Where then should we get our counsel? Lets see I believe one of the names of Jesus Christ is the mighty counselor. I would suggest we should start there. Do you need wisdom in a matter? I believe we all do. How do we obtain this counsel or wisdom?

Proverbs chapter eighteen verse one: "Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom."

Through desire and separation, this leads to the next point:

Blessed or happy is the man that does not stand in the way of sinner. He does not have his fellowship with the unsaved crowd. He does not associate with those that know not Christ.

Are we not told this in various portions of scripture?

2 Corinthians 6:14
"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?"

So if we look at the above verse and tie that in with what is written in Psalm one verse one we can see that the same words of God that were in the old testament are reiterated in the new.

We cannot stop there though. Not only are we not to stand in the way of sinners, we are not to be on the same path as they. We should not even be in their general vicinity.

Look at the following two verses:
Proverbs 4:14 "Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men."
Proverbs 4:15 "Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away."

Do you want to be happy? Get away from those who know not God. Do not form close personal friendships with the unsaved. Not because we are better then they, not because we are pious or self-righteous but rather so we do not become ensnared with their ways.

I know we have to work in the world, I realize that we live each day with the unsaved. I am not naive. Nevertheless, working and living in this world does not mean that we are to work or live like the world.

Lets now look at the last point on the verse; "Happy is the man who sitteth not in the seat of the scornful"

We have all been around people like this. They are the ones that rob your joy. They are the ones that never have a good thing to say about anyone or anything.

You tell them what a great weekend you had; they complain that it was to short. Tell them what a great job so and so is doing and they point out their weak points. They are people that are never satisfied. They are the ones with an unending supply of bitterness. It seems to ooze from their very pours.

Christian, that is not a place for you to be. If you are sitting in that seat you had better get out now.

Look at the following verse:
Proverbs 14:6a "A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not"

The word of God tells us a scorner will seek wisdom and will not find it. Why, my friend, will you seek wisdom, why my friend will you place yourself in the seat, why my friend would you want to associate with someone like that? Do you really expect to find happiness with a person whose only means of happiness comes at the expense of another? You my friends are in a bad place. There is no happiness; there is no blessedness there. On the contrary, Proverbs chapter twenty and verse ten tells us to: "Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease."

Do you want to be happy? You can obtain that blessed promise from God as stated in the opening verse. However, as important as all the things are that I outline above are you must do as stated in the following verse:

Psalms 1 verse two tells us: "But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night."

How else are you to discover these things? How else are you to realize what it requires to be happy as God intends us to be without meditating or thinking on the scriptures? We should delight in the word of God. We should dig for His wisdom as buried treasure. They are more precious then silver and gold. Through them, and only through them, can we obtain true happiness.

Fruit will not grow without nurturing. Nurturing will not take place without water, the living water of the word. Stay in the Word. Think constantly on it and we to will obtain the blessed promise below:

Psalms 1: 3 "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
