My X'ordinary Cars |

All of these cars carried my Registration number

This number was originally on a Wolseley 1500 of 1959, and the 'EN' registration is from Bury in Lancashire. |

Jaguar E Type 4.2 Fixed Head Coupé. 1965 |
I bought my Jaguar E-Type Coupé in August 1969. It was a 4.2 litre Straight 6cyl. DOHC with triple 2"SU's. It also had the Chrome Wire Wheels. I had fallen in love with them the day they first came out, and always wanted one. It was not a disappointment. It is, really, a quite rough traditional British sports car, but definitely a 'drivers car', and a joy to own. From the driver's seat the bonnet goes on for ever. It is pure adrenalin. My son and I travelled our regular 325 mile journey in it, in a time that the Ferrari was never able to match. (I commuted in those days between Newcastle and Kent) It's colour was British Racing Green, Reg No EKR 355 C, then it was KEN 68. I kept it for 5 years. I sold it for £650... ...if only we could think ahead. Now, it would be worth many times that amount. The original handbooks and tools were recently sold on eBay to a chap in California.

Ferrari
Dino 246 GT 1972 |
I owned my 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT from March 1972 until September 1974. Colour, Giallo Senape. Reg. No. KPH 4 K, then KEN 68. When I bought it, it had done about 3,000 miles, and was 3 months old. It was previously owned by Nina Rindt, the former F1 World Champion Jochen's wife. It was 'new' really. It gave me an immense amount of pleasure, but my wife never liked it, and only did two local rides in it. It was too low to the ground for her comfort, but my son Gawaine did many long trips with me in it. My Ferrari was different from every other Dino that we have seen, in that it didn't have any Dino badges on the front or rear panels, which have dents in the shape of the badges. Mine had an upright yellow Ferrari badge shewn above, in an upright dent. On the rear, instead of a prancing horse, was the Ferrari name badge shewn above. To have changed them would have meant an extremely expensive front and rear panel. So there had to be a reason. My son, Gawaine, enquired through the vehicle museums, and found that it had been the show car for Ferrari at the Geneva Motor Show. I have recently sold the original documents and tool-kit from this car on eBay and they went for nearly as much as I got for the car!!

Austin Cooper S 1963 |
This was originally an Austin Cooper 1071S, but was rebuilt as a 1400cc using a modified 1275S engine. It had a completely a beam rear axle and a detachable front, with square headlights from a Hillman Hunter. I raced the car quite a lot then sold it in 1980 to a fellow sea captain who later sold it to a US airman who took it back to the States, with him.

This is the car on the day I sold it, with its new number, having transferred KEN 68 to the Volvo on the left of the picture. The other car on the left is my Lancia Coupé. |

Volvo 164TE 1974
Reg. No. .BNC 345 M then KEN 68, and now ABB 109 M. It now has 527,000 miles on, despite not having been on the road for the last 6 years, and is 25 years old in March 1999. It is in perfect condition. It is a real collectors car as very few TE's were made, and this one is original. It features Connolly Hide upholstery, heated seats, power steering, the lot. When it was built, computer controlled EFi systems, and full Air Conditioning, big ventilated discs all round, and masses of other really nice 'goodies' were not even heard of much in road cars. But this 1974 car has them all. I have kept a full service history, and it has cost me peanuts to run and maintain it over these years. (Mainly because I have a dismantled crashed one as a full set of spares - it's even the same colour). The engine has Water and Fuel injection, and is a 3.9 litre Straight 6 with an automatic Borg-Warner gearbox. The only problem is that it was built to run on 5 ***** petrol. I do use additives but it will probably need something doing about the head (and ECU) in the long term, to enable unleaded.

I still have this car. |
