My Racing Cars

Part  5 - Prototype GT Sportscars

Costin Nathan Cosworth Ford GT

checkerTRAN.gif (9633 bytes)I bought this car in 1970. It was built to compete at Le Mans. It is built rather like the Marcos to which it is related. The car was the brainchild of Roger Nathan , who was quite successful at racing saloon car Hillman Imps. He worked with Frank Costin the well known Aerodynamicist, who is the 'Cos' of Marcos. Jeremy Marsh being the 'Mar'. Franks brother is the 'Cos' of Cosworth the Ford engine builders with Keith Duckworth being the 'Worth'. ...Phew! I say all this because in my hands it became a 'Costin Cosworth'. By a very circuitous route it became a car with a lot of the Costin brothers' input

The tub is constructed from marine plywood, with a spaceframe chassis at either end. The removable panels being fibre. The sills and around the cockpit, contain the fuel cells.

checkerTRAN.gif (9633 bytes)There were originally 4 cars built, all were open top spider cars to run with the Chrysler Imp engine, and it was very successful, in Club Racing,. The 5th car was built as a Coupé, with the purpose of running it in the 'Le Mans 24 Hours Race'. It raced at Le Mans, with a Chrysler Imp engine but did not complete the full 24 hours.

The picture of the car in blue is, sadly, the only one I have, of it, in its final colours, and with its huge amount of modifications. Some of the more obvious ones are the adjustable aerofoils fitted at the front, and the much bigger hole in the nose and the heavily cut-away rear end, There were quite a lot of changes beneath however. Quite a few suspension changes were made. Brakes , wheels and tyres were all changed. Two oil coolers were put where the rear of the original bodywork was, and the whole cooling system was altered. John Aley constructed an amazing roll cage into it. This car was incredibly quick in the mid range, from about 70 to 140 . The top speed was 210 + mph, with the Cosworth engine. This was it at its very best. However the picture of my son 'posing' in it gives a better idea of how the colour really looked. It always looked fast when it was standing still. The book of pictures went missing in a house moving.

checkerTRAN.gif (9633 bytes)This picture shows how much better the car looks, than can be seen in the above picture. This is more the true shade of blue.

My son was only about 11 then, and it was quite a thrill for him to be sitting in the car, at the World Championship BOAC 1000 Km at Brands Hatch, when the cream of the world's drivers were in the Paddock

checkerTRAN.gif (9633 bytes)I bought it as a rolling chassis (Complete but without engine), I didn't want the Chrysler engine, and I got lots of spares like front and rear spare chassis, suspension arms, discs etc. I fitted it with a Ford Cosworth engine and changed the gearbox to a new Hewland. We did a lot of development on it, and it got better and better. A lot of this work was carried out by Richard Zettering and Ken Costello (of  Costello MGBV8 fame)

checkerTRAN.gif (9633 bytes)The car became very competitive, and Ken Costello and I, entered the BOAC 1000 kms at Brands Hatch, but the engine gave up (see Bad Things). I rebuilt the engine, then later  swapped it for a much better 2 Litre TOHC Cosworth engine. When I got into the Formula Three scene, I drove much less myself, and concentrated on running my team. But the car was used, at the same time as the F3 and F2 when it was driven by Martin LeFevre, in Club Events. I still had the two Mini Cooper S's ( One 1293 cc, the other 999 cc), on the go, for myself, at the same time too. So there were 7 altogether, all at the same time.

  • Austin Cooper S  1293cc

  • Austin Cooper S    999cc

  • Costin Nathan Cosworth Ford GT 2000cc

  • Mitford Elden Minister Formula Ford 1600

  • Mitford Elden Holbay Ford Formula 3

  • Mitford Elden Holbay Ford Formula 3

  • Mitford March BMW 732 Formula 2
